Sorry, I`m sure this has been asked numerous times before: If someone has a model 36 Smith and Wesson .38 spl., and wants it converted to restricted instead of prohibited, can they just send in the barrel and register the frame as a frame only? Or does it need to be rebarreled with an over 105mm barrel?

The reason I ask is that an executrix wishes to keep the firearm instead of having it destroyed (good for her) but may not have the cash to put into making it restricted. What`s your experience with this? Many thanks from me (and her).
 
It has to be rebarreled by a gunsmith that can do it. Then reregistered if you take the barrel off it's still a prohibit firearm


1800 731 4000 then ask for a firearms tecnical advisor they will let you know what you have to do once it loses its 12.6 status it can never be converted back
 
If the barrel is removed it is still a prohib. It needs to rebarreled.

Does she intend to shoot it or keep it for sentimental reasons and perhaps frame it? I shudder to even suggest this.... it could also be deactivated.

The other option is a gun broker who would find a 12(6) owner to buy it or convert it to a restricted for sale to someone else.

Is there a family member that could inherit it? I think that would keep it as prohib.
 
Call the RCMP and ask them. I bought a S&W 39 a few years ago and the owner turned in the barrel and registered it as a frame only and transfered it to me.
When I received my barrel from the US I had it fit and called the cfc to reregister it with the new barrel length.
 
The CFC will not reclassify a short barrel to restricted until the barrel has been replaced with a longer barrel. With that said you are looking at about $300 minimum to have a gunsmith do the job for you. In most cases that is more than the gun is worth. I would sell the gun to a 12(6) license holder and use the money to get something else.

I have an early sixties vintage nickel plated model 36. Nice little gun.

Call the cfo, like was mentioned, talk to the technician and confirm. I do believe if the barrel is accounted for and proven to be destroyed, this may just work, otherwise any pistol without a barrel becomes a prohib. If it was done once before it may just be possible to do again. The only way you will know for sure is by talking to a tech at 1 800 731 4000
 
+1: "frame only restricted" works.

Accounting for the deadly dangerous 2" barrel is the main worry.

Your local Police Department can give you a one page form with a case number on it, indicating that the barrel was turned in for destruction. Or, there are companies licensed to receive these (Marstar, for example) who can provide a receipt and maybe $10. Call your CFO and pave the way for her.

Bring a copy of the registration so your friendly local Policeman can record the serial number of the firearm the barrel came from... CFC likes that.
 
I'd call Wortners and get an idea of the cost of fitting it with a 5 inch barrel (S&W makes a 5 inch factory J frame 38 barrel). It should be cheaper and easier than making a custom 4.2 incher. Wortners will be OK to receive a prohib. You could also ship it out here to Murray Charlton Enterprises - they're the other authorized Smith warranty depot.
 
smith also makes (from what i'm told) a 4.25" barrel for the canadian market, it fits on the model 68, not sure about the others, but the 68 is also a .38 spl
