I have a friend who is retired LEO, he still has his conceal carry revolver, .38 special, and his paperwork to allow it for duty if or when he is needed. It is a 12(6) 2" barrel i'm told, anyway i'm trying to get him interested in IPSC and of course he is not wanting to part with a bunch of cash on new guns and equipment, so he would like to use his revolver. Can he? is he breaking any laws? whats the deal? can someone enlighten me. Thanks

I'm no expert, but my understand is that if your friend has the appropriate permission (e.g. 12(6)) and an ATT, he's good to go for using that revolver for IPSC. I was at a shoot recently where a 12(6) - holder was shooting a short revolver, in fact - he did very well with it too :)

Your friend will need a large number of speed loaders, and will not score as high as the semi autos because of the extra time required for the reloads. But he is competing only against any other revolver shooters or himself ( as he shoots more events he can see how he is improving in the game). Some revolver shooters really do quite well against some of the auto shooters, but it would be very difficult for a revolver shooter to be match winner because of course design (4 or 5 targets together) and number of rounds fired. That doesn't mean you and your friend can't go to some matches and have fun shooting together.

Prohib is no problem. I shoot a 12-6 revolver in IPSC. He would get an att the same way as a non 12-6.

12-6 is only a way to make a bunch of "cheap" firearms dissapear over x many years. I think it was mostly aimed at the .25, .32, .380 x-european police pistols that flooded the market many moons ago.
