I thought it was about time I put together another 45 for myself. About 6 mo. ago I started looking at all the spare parts that had been collecting dust. I started fitting and taking notes on what was missing to complete this handgun. I got side-tracked on six project 1911A1 for others. Finally got back to my project last weekend. Started on Friday night and took it shooting on Sunday. First 100 rds. and no problems found.
I started with a Caspian frame, welded on and blended in mag-well, checkering on the front grip and under the trigger guard. Polished and re-contoured the feed ramp. Beaver tail grip safety was next. I normally use a short trigger due to my hand size but only had a long one, so I installed it anyway, installed an extended mag release. Next came a Norc. sear, disconnecter and hammer. Did a 3 lb trigger job but I could not stand the spur hammer so I cut it off. Now it looks OK. I only had one thumb safety left so I used it. I only had a curved, checkered mainspring housing so on it went. The grip feels a little big for me so I think I will change it.
I had a Rawlings Custom slide with a Colt barrel, ramped and comped. It also has a long guide rod with a comp support on it. Lowered the and flared the port on the slide. Installed a Smith Enterprise adjustable rear site. Opened up and polished the rear of the chamber on the barrel. Fitted barrel, fitted slide to frame and made all the minor adjustments needed to get everything to work properly.
I need to change a few things when the parts and funds come together. Extended slide release, mag. release button, ambi-safety, hammer, straighten the front grip area under the trigger guard, and a straight mainspring housing. I think I will also change the grip panels to a highly figured wood.
