Hi all

I recently re-built my stock on a Lee Enfield I had. I started from this

And I made this. The only piece I did not made was the shoulder stock (don't know the word in english, sorry)

So I figured that since I'm not that bad at stock making, and I needed a small project to clear my mind after work, I looked in my gun armoire and I have this old beaten single shot H&R 12 gauge shotgun I don't use anymore. The forearm (the piece under the barrel) was held with duct-tape because the metal pin broke before I got it, I paid 50$ for it 3 years ago, and it was there. So the name "Because I can"

I wanted to have a pistol grip, short barrel, and a winter camo on it. Why ? Just for fun...

Here are some pics. For this part I had 3 layers of russian birch plywood, I cutted the center one to fit the action, and I glued the 3 layers together. With my grinder and sanding disk I shaped it

Then, I glued up the piece for the fore arm, and I assembled the rounded part at the end of it

Next, how to hold the barrel with something else than duct-tape ? I took inspiration from the inner band that is on my Lee Enfield, and I took some UHMW and made a ring.

Then I carved the recess to receive it, I tapped a screw under it, and now I can squeeze the barrel home.

And here is the gun as it is tonight, with some Jeep loop to attach a sling. I will cut the barrel to about where the tape is ( around 20 inches or so...)

I hope you like it, next will be my first attempt at winter camo....

Some of guys make me sick. I can't believe how skilled you are :p If I tried such a project, I'm sure there would be a help thread, followed by the purchase of a new stock to replace my kindling. Great work!

looks good if it were me tho i would have made the grip closer to the trigger it looks awkward the way it is

Yeah I hear you. However it has to do with the way the action is built. And it is not that bad to hold on. In fact, I can move the hammer (again, I lack the good terminology) quicker this way.

Thanks for the comments, both on this one and on the Lee

Nice work! The H&R looks like a lot of fun to build. you said the wood is 3 strips of Rissian burtch plywood?!?! Very good Idea! What type of wood is the .303?

its called contructive critisism. why bother trying to make somthing better if everyone tells you that it is great, when there is room for improvement

Cool, and it looks good.
I do have a couple questions though.

Russian Birch ply means the "baltic birch" veneered stuff? Or something else?

How will you seal the edge grain of the plywood? Just paint won't do it, especially if you're using it outdoors, which I assume you will. My recommendation would be to get some "West System" epoxy. It's a two part epoxy, with a bunch of different fillers you can use to bulk it up, that works AWESOME to seal up wood, or anything else. I use it when people don't want to pay to replace rotten wood work, and it'll last longer and wear better than any wood product.
An advantage to the west system product too is that you could sand it to a smooth finish, buff it, and have your finish, provided you use the appropriate filler.
Most good hardwear stores that cater to contractors rather than homeowners (simply put, not home depot or rona) will carry this, or a similair product. Paint and plexiglass stores, or even boat supply houses might have it too if you have trouble finding it.
http://www.westsystem.com/ss/ that's the stuff!

Any reason you used UHMW instead of soldering or brazing a fitting to the bottom, so you'd still be able to use a bead site?

Here are the answer to the question...

1. Yes, exactly the baltic birch veneer, which has something like 13 layers or so.

2. I did not think of it, I will paint it and put a coat of lacquer over the paint, followed by a coat of beeswax. Should be ok.

3. Bead sight ? Long gone on my donor shotgun....so I think I could screw a small screw on top of the UHMV. Oh, and I had the UHMW and I don't know how to braze or solder.

I think he was trying to say "Your skills are sick (good)" to the BobF.

Hey BobFortier,

That is really good work on the both guns.
Some guys have talent.
That 303 is a beauty.
