I've had a particular project in mind for a little more than a year now, and it is really now starting to come together.
I have primarily bowhunted with a longbow my entire 20 year hunting career. I have shot a handful of birds with shotgun and a couple larger animals with borrowed rifles. I moved to the Cariboo region of BC 2 years ago and got into predator hunting. bought a 243 and very quickly got into reloading and all the fun associated with that new hobby! I have 2 kids and my 5 year old daughter is darned adamant she needs to come bear hunting with Dad. I love bear hunting, just not too keen on tracking an arrow struck bruin with my little princess. The 243 is capable, but a tad light...
Many years ago I briefly owned a Husqvarna in 30-06. I never shot it and sold it when a friend of mine was in need of a good rifle. I had no interest in rifle hunting, it only sat there looking pretty. I remembered liking the rifle and knew of the rugged reliability of the Mauser style action. I did a little more research and found the 30/06 could relatively easily be converted to another cartridge that long held my fascination, the 35 Whelen. I figured, as long as I had jumped down the path of reloading, might as well have a cool, irregular cartridge to reload for, right?
I tracked down a Husqvarna 1600 from Intersurplus. A gently used representative with a sound stock. I received it in January of this year and put it in the safe until I could acquire other parts needed for the build. In the interim, I mounted an inexpensive Bushnell scope, bedded the recoil lug and headed to the range to see what the rifle could produce in its current state. I was quite pleased with the results given they were factory loads. The gun sports the iconic Husqvarna plastic butt plate. This will without a doubt have to be replaced with a quality recoil pad. I was feeling it after 15 rounds of 06, I am certainly going to want something to tame the bite of the Whelen.
Last week I contacted Bob Jury and ordered a 22" 1-12 twist barrel in 35 caliber for the planned build. Hopefully I can have the rig all put together and a load worked up by April and ready to take my little princess along in search or a spring bear.
