So I've been looking to build an ultra cheap rifle. And I wasn't going to do anything unless I found the right components.

So there I was, at my local sporting goods store, and out of the corner of my eye I spotted the clearance rack...
Uh-oh...
A rem 700... Ok, I'll bite, let's have a look... Hmm 7mm-08. Well now, that's one of the few I have my voices narrowed down to.

$500.

:(

I bought it and the cheapest weaver bases they had, along with some Winchester brass...

I know some of you are reading this shaking your head, potentially crying/slapping your monitor. But bear with me. I have a tack driver, it's an x-bolt in 7mm rem mag, but I know I more than likely will never be able to replace the barrel, so at least with a 700 action, I can do something with it at a later date. So not a complete waste of money.

I have no idea why you would think a rem 700 in 708 for $500 is a waste of money ? its one of the best factory actions on the market

Fair enough. A good gun/action that probably shoots more than well as is and you can build up in the future. Definitely a good buy.

I'm looking to get into either a 700 or a savage action for a LR gun. Honestly I think people just loooooove to tote their expensive rigs out their and blab about how much dough they dropped on em' and really I don't believe that half of the crap makes a difference. A decent rifle, like most any 700, with a good scope (yeah even a 300 bushnell'll getya out to 500+ meters just fine) and some good ammo will do ya fine. If your lookin' to put all your rounds through the same hole at 1000 then ya your gonna need to drop some coin.

For me LR shooting consists of 500+ yards on a head/torso shaped gong and a hit is a kill (ooooh I said kill and i'm shooting targets, ya gonna lock me up?) and that is practical and real shooting. Works for me at least /rant off

Sorry op about the rant there.

Topside, for initial break in and minor group/velocity/load testing, I popped my 4-12 vx1 leupold on top... Some factory federal premiums with nosler partitions grouped about 7/8" - 1 1/4".
Acceptable for break in. (I really hate cleaning during break in, but I did)

Modifications, stage 1.

Very Happy with the vx1, I did the only logical thing. I pulled it off... Not enough zoom, no balistics reticle, and cost too much for project F'in cheap.

Into the junk closet I went.

Top two options as it currently sits.
- Redhead persuit , 6-24x40. 1/8 moa adjustments. No moa or mil dot reticle. 1" tube
- 'counter sniper' (ya, I'm even laughing right now) 6-24x42, 1/4 moa adjustments, mil dot reticle. 30mm tube

I have Leo rings for both...

Next range day I'll let you know what one I went with.

I actually think it was one of the better gun buys I have made, but the mods I'll be doing to it are going to be interesting to say the least.
The whole reason I got it was because I wanted a 700 action. And I wanted a heavy barrel, but since I didnt get the barrel I wanted, I'll see what I can do with this. On the cheap

20 moa rail... No no no... Costs too much for F'in.
Spare piece of brass under rear weaver base, with a bit of epoxy to stabilize/ fill any voids. Check!

Should give me about 15 moa, I think.

But now my bases are offset without the propped angle on them. So that will put unwanted torque on the scope tube... A quick file across the front edge to even them out and have them going on the same plane should help reduce (but not eliminate) torque on the tube

Burris signature z rings are going to be your friend

WTF, seriously??? To say your cheap is an understatement.
You need to change the name to "project welfare"
Im no pro at long range but Im a firm believer in "you get what you way for"
Hope it works out for ya

X2. Use Burris Signature Z rings with the inserts.
If you are going to shim, don't file, use a piece of aluminum 1" rod with lapping compound. Get both rings aligned.
Don't know how long the long range is for your shooting, but with a decent scope you might not need any sloping of the scope.
7mm-'08 is a dandy round, lots of excellent 7mm bullets.
As far as scopes go, there is inexpensive, and there is cheap. There is a difference.

my rem 770 in 30 06 was only $375 with the scope/rings included on a low level bushnell...

great accuracy, no complaints, there a real differfence between a 700 and a 770?

I should also mention that I am ordering good, quality parts. But I want to see how well the thing can do on an Amish budget

Back to the 7-odd-8

Took the stock off, pulled the trigger group, polished the sear engagement surfaces, along with the release on the bolt.

Smoother, and perhaps even lighter. Or at least it feels that way.

The stock sps stock is a flexible pos to say the least, with two nubs on the foregrip side that contact the barrel, so to stiffen it, I went to the ol' garage to see what I had...

Between the ribs, bondo fiberstrand filler.

PERFECT!!!

Glassed it and sanded EVERYTHING down to give me a true 1/4" float on the barrel.

Action is still a little sloppy... 5 min epoxy. Yup!

She's set now and has a nice tight fit... If nothing else, these two things should help her shrink up the groups.

I am sorry to say that I don't have a perfect load developed for it yet, so I won't have a true comparison... But if I can get her to pound 1000yard mark consistently, I'll be a happy panda.

Until all my other parts arrive/paid for

So far I'm looking at 35.6-36.0 gr of re15 but it's only flying at 2200 pushing a 168 Berger... I'm starting to cook something up with win760 and see how that does with 168-162gr bergers/hornadys behind it...

I've also been looking at pushing some 140 bergers
