Project: I'm really F'in cheap.

I'm laughing so hard right now! That's awesome.. when are you posting complete pictures of the built? I can't wait to see that!! ahahahahah

You feel that the Remington barrel is accurate enough?
I thought I would change the barrel immediately. Prefer purchase the custom barrel from well-known barrel manufactures.

Buy a used remington model 700 heavy barrel in 223/308 in wood stock. Get a set of redfield junior scope mounts with rings. Get a 1" 3x9 redfield scope. Put it together and you will have a copy of the basic m40 vietnam era tactical rifle. It served the usmc and us army very well in the 60's and 70's. They used this before going to the 40x remington rifles.

Sorry for the lack of updates... Hunting season has taken priority.

So, pulled out the soldering iron, textured the palm swells and will eventually texture the fore grip.
Developed a little rocket load for the 140 bergers, and took it hunting on Friday.

Gun was shooting just under 1 moa, loaded to max mag depth, so after hunting season ill see if I can shrink it up

Update time:

So I built what I thought was a decent load via the ocw (optimal charge weight) method, and it shot decent... 41.3 gr of RE15 seated to max mag length, just for hunting.

Went to the range the other day with my trusty briefcase of ammo, with that load, in a few seating depths. As I had expected, every .020 closer to the lands I got, the smaller the groups became. And at .010 off I came out with a remarkable 1/4" group... At 100 yards... 4 shot group to boot!

So I'm building a few more and taking them out this weekend to see if 'really F'in cheap' can replicate.

I'll keep you guys posted

I have to say this is one of my new favorite threads to follow. I have an old 7-08 Varmint spcial that i bought on a budget just out of college. Had it for about 20 years now and still love it!
I seem to recall paying $485 for the rifle (it was new but discontinued by rem) and $300-ish for a weaver v-16 with redfield mounts.

My best accuracy hascome with 120 grain seirra's over IMR 3031 or Varget. but have had good loads for long range with 140 and 160 grain boattails out to 1000 yards.

I used to setmilk jugs out and would average about 7 of 10 with it.

Look forward to seeing what you can do with yours.

best group to date, 4 shot.

I'm going out again this weekend and I'll show you all my groups. If I can I'll hit up the back side where the long range is. Hopefully I'll be able to test the scope tracking and repeatability

Range day(s)

Saturday, -13 to -15 Celsius (I really f'in hate the cold)
Did not clean the gun in the past 3 weeks, previously took it hunting, bagged a whitey (clean kill, 150 yards)
Between hunting and other range days, 150 rounds worth of dirt and crap. Mostly laziness, partly, I wanted to see if she liked to shoot dirty.

Best 5 shot group of the day... 1.75 moa @ 100 yards.

Came home, cleaned the piss out of it.

Day 2 at the range: -3 Celsius

Put 2 fouling shots through it and shot the same load as the day before. About 1/2 moa... 4 shot group, three times in a row.

Confidence in my gun was rising again... Unfortunately I had ran out if that ammo. But I did have quite a few loads to test with the 162 hornady match bullets, driven by Winchester 760 and varget, respectfully.

Chrono was acting up all day... Not cool.

The w760 I had the charge weight down already, but was testing for bsd.

Best 5 shot was just over 1/2 inch, worst was 1 1/2 inches...

Varget showed some promising groups, and analysis of the target still has to be completed.

I'll try and get some pics up this week.
