Promag 81a mount

Just got it from Mystic a CGN dealer thanks Jerry. Took longer then expected but I got it before X Mass. It only cost 124.00 everything in shipped to my door! I have to say it is solid! The only difference I can see is that there is no wedge that fits in to the striper clip guide. There is a set screw both forward and aft. 0 fitting issues with my circa 2003 M305. As you can see it is very low profile and looks like it belongs on the gun. This is the steal model. 81a while researching this mount I had found plenty of Americans south of the border who swear by it.

I will mount an aim point that I have and let you all know how it holds zero. Fro what I can see so far it looks like a good deal for the price

I think you will be quite please with it if you make sure it's level on all 3 axis.
Also don't froget the front pad should be touching the top of the reciever to apply preasure up-wards. This will make everything good and tight when you have everything installed to the proper spec's. Just REMEMBER no over tightning the bolt or hex screw.

My promag mounted to a similar angle as yours and was enough to exceed the windage on the scope. I have now shimmed the mount to bring it back into line but have not tested it. Be careful not to over tighten the stripper guide screw and the receiver screw as on mine this put the mount under twist. I could move the point of zero looking through my Leupold bore sighter by moving the scope in a horizontal manner. I still have to test mine on the range but am not super confident.

Promag 81A

On their website it says you have to replace the stripper guide with a mounting attachment (dovetail wedge). I sold one a while back (mine was missing the wedge and I replaced it with one from ARMS). The rear set screw is angled so it tightens up against the wedge ( the ARMS screws into it). Mysticplayers pics looks like there is a wedge (too dark to tell for sure). Guess the question is what does rear set screw tighen into?

There is no wedge as in the arms mount. The picture I took was not straight the mount lines up perfectly straight without shimming

The search function here on CGN is your friend:
Search for PROMAG and you will find several positive reviews,
including a few of my own.
From Dec 2007:

" I personally don't care that the Promag mount doesn't come with a dovetail part to connect with the set screw ... parts left out cost nothing and rarely break. If you can afford it, save up for a scope mount that costs almost as much as your Chinee M-14. But if you can't afford it, the Promag is the best of the cheapies."

PS: there are TWO models of PROMAG M-14 mounts ... the one I like is the PM081A ==> basically an ARMS clone.

Of course, as always,
your personal mileage may vary

I hope yours is straight, mine must have been only a couple of degrees off but enough to run out of windage. Mine didn't have the dovetail insert either but i wish it did as it would give a bit more surface area to grip and take any flex out of the steel. My rifle is the new Norinco "carbine" version in New Zealand which comes factory with an 18.5 inch barrel so it could be different to the previous versions. I also had to remove some material from the bottom of the mount to stop it interfering with the synthetic stock.

Attached is the pre shimming images.

I don't think you can go wrong with that one the price is right also. But lets face it the on cool factor the ARMS 18 wins hands down

the arms is cool because it has a nato stock number, the leatherwood is cool because it takes in account the varying receiver dimensions the m14 series is known for, it is also windage adjustable which is a major complaint by arms mount users, the leatherwood has more screws and such to loosen but that is what loctite is for...if i am the first i'll do up a review on the leatherwood...

How do you like the Redfield Revolution on it??? Does it have the Accu-Range Reticle on it and if so, do you find that it works with the 308 round???
