As we were shooting Skeet Sunday, a young man walks over, as asks if he can watch, as he has never shot skeet before, but is interested. After a round, we ask if he would like to borrow a shotgun, and shoot a round with us. He accepts, and shoots 14 with a borrowed gun. Last night the young man shows up with his own shotgun, and shoots 19 the first round. Then he notices that I am shooting doubles, so he asks if he can shoot doubles. The shoots 16-18 for two rounds, and then finishes with a 20 at doubles, shooting my style, with two pairs at station 4, high/low, then low/high. I have never seen someone do so well on their fifth round of skeet. If he keeps this up, I hope to be handing out some of those patches that have been in my cash box, for a long time.

If he keeps this up, he might soon be our top shooter, in the mean time, I enjoy shooting with good shooters, and I seem to shoot better myself when shooting with them. But I am not making too many assumptions yet, as I have seen shooters break 20 their first day at regular skeet, and they still have not shot a clean round, a couple of years later.

Good on you guys for lending him a gun and inviting him to participate. I usually have a second gun and spare shells for just such occasions. Almost everyone who I've introduced to clay shooting has stuck with it in form or another.

Some people just seem to be naturals when they start and some never quite get there, but it's all good. This year it's been pretty good, we've had to shoot 4 hats already !!!!!

I haven't handed out a 25 straight patch since I took over the skeet chair position two years ago, let alone have someone run 100, so we can shoot a hat. We are a small club, mostly 50+ year old shooters, and most of us earned our patches many years ago.

I tried skeet shooting on Wednesday with my 3gun semiauto shotgun stoeger m3k 24" barrel cylinder choke, first two rounds were basically free instruction by a senior member in stations 3-5. Third round actually shot the full round with all stations and 'the guys', ended up with 19/25. Nailed station 3,4 &5 tho was really happy with that.

As I was about to leave, one of the guys tells me to get a good quality over under when I get a bit older and decide to actually shoot regularly as it'll make the sport that much easier And how there's competitions for skeet etc.

I think I'm going to stick with more action sports as my main firearm hobby, but when I get older I can definitely see myself busting Clays on the regular! I'm probably going to shoot skeet atleast once or twice more this summer.

So can someone explain to me what the heck skeet shooting even is? Can I go inawoods and have my friends throw those clay things in the air and me shoot them? Im just really unfamiliar with what it is.

Throwing clay targets in the woods with a hand thrower or portable thrower is not shooting skeet. And the targets are not "skeets".

Is your club taking news members ? Could be interested in that than you might start handling some patch , haven't shoot any skeet at a range but I used to have my auto trap in similar way ,

Informal shooting with one portable thrower, is a long ways from shooting actual skeet, but yes, we are taking new members. Check out our web site at Camrose Shooting Sports Association for membership details.

Getting back to the original topic, I've got a young member who has been showing great promise of the past 2 years. He recently bought his first 4 barrel set and an a bad day gives us older folks a run for our money. It's impressive to watch them start off and then develop into true top level competitors.

The fellow that I posted did what most new shooters do, and he floundered a bit when he started thinking too much, but I still think that he is going to be a good shooter when he relaxes, and stops trying too hard. We actually have a couple of new shooters that have the potential to shoot a clean round before the snow flies.
