Is there anywhere that has relaoding data for Promo Powder ?? The Alliant site has some but it is limited in its loads. For example it does not list a WinAA hull - 1oz - Promo load. At one time I recall seeing a PDF sheet on the net from Alliant that listed a ton of different loads ?? Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Jacky:

Use the same data as for "Red Dot" ... but the press bushing lists don't apply. Promo is "denser", volume for volume. Try two bushing sizes down, as a "starting point" for your load development to get a particular weight, but VERIFY the actual weight of the charge thrown on an accurate powder scale.

Alliant markets "Promo" as a price point reloaders powder formulated from other "surplus" powders they make (including "Select" and "Red Dot", but may contain others as well ) re-formulated to have burn/speed ballistic characteristics the same as "Red Dot" 8 lb. kegs only, and no, it does not contain "floor sweepings" as some would suggest.

I've used it virtually since it hit the market here ... maybe 12-15 8 lb. cannisters so far.

I find it very consistant & reliable.

YesI have used quite a bit as well. It works well and I load about 17 grains and have chrony'd it at 1200 fsp in my 1 oz load.

The reason I want some actual data is that I would like to compare pressures between American Select and Promo and Green Dot in a 1 oz load using a downrange Jammer XL1 ( 8 pettle purple) and a winchester AA hull.

You may have to go to Alliant or Jammer direct.

Any of the published data from Alliant does not recommend the
Jammer XL-1 for use with Red Dot or Promo in 1 oz. loads, and if
I remember correctly, not with Green Dot or Select either.

For 1 oz. loads, it's the XL-2 ... XL-1 for 7/8 oz.

Do you know the reason behind this ?? I have shot probably 2000 rounds with this combo and it seems to work well

Nope ... but you wanted to know about pressure ... you might get a surprise.

On the other hand, the XL-1 may just not be optimum for development of a proper wad column ( wad pressure, crimping, etc.) There IS usually a reason !!!

I have had to play quite a bit to get my MEC to crimp well. I also think that the pressures are high maybe even as high as Green Dot.

Funny that they list the Jammer XL2 or the DR XL1 and Red Dot as a combo. It could very well be that Alliant has not tested 1oz loads with Promo yet or just haven't published it ??

Finally got in touch with Alliant Powder and they informed me that the load of 17 grains Promo with the downrange Jammer XL-1 wad is fine/ safe but they did not give me an exact pressure. I have since switched to American Select Powder anyhow.....hmmmmm American Select.........sweet powder. 18.5 grains, Low pressure, low recoil, 1200 fps, 1oz, clean burning......... one sweet load :)

i've beenn loading promo for a while now. guy at the gun shop said loads the same as red dot.said to use the same bushings. havn't had any problems so far.1 1/8.loads.with my lee load all.seems to burn black though. thought it was the cheep powder. may be its just not all getting burnt?doesn't seem to kick any more than factory loads.

It is a little dirty. I was more concerned about pressures in a 1 oz load but they are fine. I still think or guess that the pressure is high using 17 grains and a jammer XL-1 wad. Maybe 9000 +

Since I started this thread I traded a bunch of 7/8 oz wads for Claybuster 1 oz wads and bought a jug of American Select. Well the pressure using this powder is WAY down
(6900 psi) and I can still get the 1200 fps I like. As well the CB wad makes a much better crimp than the Jammer XL-1 I was using.
