Anybody know where I can find a definitive list of proof marks? I'm trying to date a pistol and I'm not recognizing a lot of the marks on this one, it's a "belgian" nagant in some 9mm caliber I was sold it on the understanding that it had the pre 1893 belgian marks and was dated 1878. my importer recived it today and says neither of these marks are present. ( he also describes a series of marks I've never heard of) so any tips on where to find this stuff would be helpful

Try this to start, Loki did a lot of work here

That is a good sticky, the marks you will likely be looking for are the british ELG in the oval which prove it is before 1893, usually on the rear face of the cylinder or some times the front, hard to see on occasion, you will want pics and caliber if at all possible , all markings are important and will help when calling for a letter, most time the verifier helped a lot in identifying the gun! Good luck!

Thanks for the mention of the thread and how much work went into it BSA Jack :D.

That's the exact thread I would have pointed you to OP. As bobdbldr has pointed out it's typically found on the rear of the cylinder, your importer may have to take the cylinder out to see the pre-1893 marking. Typically there will be a number or makers marking that matches on the frame and cylinder to show the matching parts were manufactured at the same time. The number and pre-1893 marking would typically be on the rear of the cylinder and not always visible without removal of the cylinder. Sometimes it can be found under the grip.

Ask your seller where he claims the markings to be, if they're not there I hope he has a return policy for improperly described items.

Hope that helps.
