Can I just get see if I am reading the regs right. Basically in Ontario for a kid under the age of 16 to hunt legally he has to have his Hunter Apprentice course and can only share a firearm with a licenced hunter. And once he turns 16 he can hunt on his own? Does he have to take the course all over again? Thanks

I don't see why he would have to, take the hunter safety course and then you pass it you are good to go, don't need to take it again unless you let your stuff expire for a certain period.

Wasn't it 18 to get a PAL and whatnot?

In BC its 19 to hunt solo.......dont get it as the feds trust me to own firearms but i cant hunt with them.....

He can't have his own firearm? That is shameful.

this is correct for most people. i did my firearms course when i just turned 17 and there was a loophole that the instructor informed me about. i totally forget the details but i got my PAL when i was 17.

but get this, i had my PAL and couldnt buy ammo from walmart or canadian tire. their policy is you have to be 18 to buy ammo. i could buy guns, just not ammo:confused::confused::rolleyes:

Youths having passed the firearm safety course can apply for a minors permit at 15 yrs old. They can also start purchasing hunting licenses at 15 in ontario. Minors permit to my understanding allows them to borrow and use firearms. Basically not allowed to purchase their own guns and ammo but allowed to use them. Anyone with more detailed info please fill me in as my apprentice hunter son turns 15 this year and we plan to apply for minors permit before turkey season rolls around next spring.

My understanding was that in Ontario you can get your hunting license with parental permission at 15, then you can get a minors permit, this allows you to use a borrowed gun within a range that can be controlled by a compentant adult with a full firearms license. What the range is nobody knows, ha ha, lots of guys are out there deer hunting at 15 and 16 with minors permits but how solo it is I do not know.

If you use a bow you can go solo in ontario at 15, when you get your full hunting license.

this is correct as far as i know. ive asked a few different people at the firearms center and they each gave the same answer one way or another. a minor must be in immediate supervision at all times which they say is within earshot and 100% visible at all times.

buuuuut...kids should stick with their parents anyways to learn things about hunting even though most want to go out on their own.

A minor’s licence permits the borrowing of non-restricted firearms (ordinary rifles and shotguns) for the following activities:
  • target practice
  • organized shooting competitions
  • hunting
  • being instructed in the use of firearms
A minor's licence also permits the acquisition of ammunition, unless there is an age restriction under provincial or territorial law.
As a general rule, the following requirements must be met to be eligible for a minor's licence:
  • The applicant must be at least 12 years old. If they are younger than 12, they may obtain a minor's licence only if they are Canadian residents and their Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) determines that they need to hunt or trap to sustain themselves or their family.
  • As a general rule, they must pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course tests before they apply for a licence. However, an exception may be made if they are Canadian residents and they need to hunt or trap in order to sustain themselves or their family.
A licence application form (CAFC 671) can be obtained by contacting the CFO. Non-residents can contact the CFO of the province or territory where they will most likely use the firearm.
A firearms officer may interview the applicant or their parent/guardian, who must first agree and consent to the conditions under which the minor may use firearms, before a minor's licence will be issued.
Conditions may be placed on the licence. For example, some supervision may be required when they use a firearm.
The minor's licence will expire on the earlier of:
  • the 18th birthday, or
  • the expiry date shown on their licence"---------------
When my son got a minor's permit at 15 this was just after Columbine and his condition was he could hunt only with me til he turned 18 , . 6 years later his sister's condition was hunt with a licensed individual until 16 and then she was on her own

The minor's license allows the minor to borrow a firearm and purchase ammunition (if the store/province has no age limit). Also, the minor may borrow a firearm for use, but they do NOT have to be accompanied by an adult. A minor may hunt by themselves with a minors POL, as long as they meet the minimum age requrement and hold a license for the type of game they are hunting in their province.

Firearm Users Under 18:
http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/factsheets/minor_e.asp

As a rule, supervision is not required, but the CFO and the minor's parents may place restrictions on the minor's use of a firearm.

EDIT: Wayne beat me to it.
