O.K. I have a Crosman 500x (break barrell) .22cal (5.5mm) & a Crosman 1377 American Classic pneumatic pump bolt action in .177 cal (4.5mm) pellet. I'm very hyper about taking care of my guns, even my air guns as I want to pass them to my sons.
Anyways when I bought them new from Canadian tire, I asked the guy about proper lubrication. He said that 3 in 1 oil is good enough but after doing research i found out that certain oils can ruin the seals in the airguns. I clean my guns very well & put less than 50 rounds a year through them. But I'm not sure what kind of oil to use. My wife stumbled across some Crosman Pellgun oil & bought it for me. is this the right kind ? Or do I need something else ?

I'm not sure if I put this in the right forum. If I should have put this in the airgun forum I'm sorry. All input is welcome.

Thanks.

3 in 1 oil will wreck your break barrel air rifle. The spring piston air rifles cause high compression on firing just like a diesel engine. The low flashpoint oil like 3 in 1 will react just like diesel fuel does in an engine. What you need is a silicone based oil. I am not sure about Crosman pellgun oil. It does say its OK for high compression airguns but if I were you I would get to a specialist airgun shop and get some silicone oil. You should also get a small tub of moly grease for the spring. One that contains silicone. A small dab on the spring will keep it lubricated and keep the noise down from the spring twanging!

sea77ca "Pellgunoil is just a non-detergent 30W mineral oil and it works very well if not used in excess. 3 in 1 is also a non-detergent oil which contains no silicone. A lot of airgunner use 3 in 1 with no issues. Its the detergent in some oils that damages the seals. Most air/co2 gun maker advice against silicone based oils. These oil are great for the seals but seem to cause high metal to metal wear.
