Proper way to pin a mag

I have a mag that was ordered from a site sponsor and it came pinned to 7 and not to 10. Emails have gone unanswered, so I decided to correct this myself. How can I figure out where the correct place would be to drill a new hole and pop in a new rivet to make it hold 10 like it's supposed to?

Geometry. Diameter of a cartridge, width of the magazine stack determines the separation of alternating right/left rounds (or easier if it's single stack) and thus the contact point of adjacent circles. Now you calculate the height effect of adding a round to the stack. Add the three rounds' height to the existing rivet hole and drill.

If you remove the 7-round limiter and use live or dummy cartridges to experimentally determine the position for a 10-round limiter, you will find yourself in possession, temporarily, of a Prohibited Device. Naughty.

I load ten rounds, turn mag upside down and remove base plate and spring. Measure distance to bottom part of follower that will hit the pin. Reduce by 1/10th so mag will hold 10 1/2 rounds, so it will go in with slide closed.

Should I activate the counter measures once I hear the black helicopters circling? Lol

In all seriousness, I was thinking this same thing, so I will only perform this procedure in the US when I'm down there shortly. Promise. :ninja:

The follower is attached to the spring by a clip of some sort. Removing the spring will cause the follower to be removed at the same time. Would that not make my stack of rounds lose their structure?

Take base plate off and detach the spring from follower, then put base plate back on, part way, to hold the spring in place. Load mag, invert, remove base plate & spring - measure.

Make sure you videotape it removing the baseplate, I think it'll make everyones day. Or at least wear safety glasses as removing the basepad with a compressed spring is not recommended.

Depending on the type/model of mag the pining method might vary, I wouldn't want to put another rivet/hole near the current one.

Like I said depending on the mag, does the base plate remove?

I would keep pestering the supplier first, you paid for a proper pinned mag. If emails/ calls don't work, post on their forum. That will usually get their attention. Why should your mag be deficient at purchase.

Just devils advocate...this time of summer maybe vacation and other summer has interrupted their ability to monitor email? Techy problem?
Regardless....I'd continue to pursue the vendor for a replacement. Even if you repin successfully the mag will be butchered and devalued...and more likely to split/crack otherwise fail...the mag bodies are not engineered to be drilled/punctured/weakened once...much less twice.

Maybe your next email could suggest if further emails are required the RCMP will be cc'd?

Good luck

Nothing the rcmp can do about it, it was pinned for 10 or less, it's a civil matter.

Public scrutiny does wonders, especially a site sponsor, don't need to protect their name. Send them a PM here first
