This issue / debate came up several times this season...

Can a person who shot an animal protect the kill from predators?

For example, guy shoots a moose, punches his tag, guts it, heads back to camp to get some help, returns to the kill and finds that a grizz or very large squirrel has claimed his kill. Unfortunately, for hunter guy he does not have a grizz or squirrel tag and is several hundred km in the bush and can not easily discuss the matter with a CO.

What now?

I know for sure in Alberta that if you shot a grizzly that had claimed your kill, you would be in a whole lot of trouble. I can't see BC being any different.

If you are close enough to your kill to shoot a grizzly you can prove your life was threatened as well......the ole rule judged by 12 then carried by 6 applies

Once the bear is on it it's his. You can't legally shoot the bear or wolverine or whatever. Technically you couldn't shoot a bear even if you did have a tag for one as shooting one on an animal carcass is not legal in BC.

Who would want a dirty old moose carcass full of dirt and bear piss anyways?

THanks for the heads up on that BOO I never knew that.Usually a grizzly will move the carcase and try and bury it till it ripens for his taste.
