What are the hunting regs in Ont. regarding "small game" or "non-game" animals.

In Alberta you can hunt rabbits (and a few otheres) at anytime of year with out a licence. So if you are stopped with a gun, normally an officer will say "What are you doing here sir"? Now if you say "I am hunting rabbits, sir". And stick to that statement. If you look under a bush, for a rabbit, once in awhile then you are not even telling a lie. You should not have a problem. If you say"I am looking for a good area for deer" or "I am scouting". you could be in trouble. If you are fishing or berry picking, in Ont. can you carry a firearm for protection?

This is a gray area. If there is an open gun season for moose, deer or bear you are not permitted a rifle greater than .22 Cal. or larger than #2 shot (BBB if steel shot, BB if Bismuth), unless you have a valid licence for big game. If there is NO open season for big game, you COULD be charged (at the discretion of the CO) for hunting big game out of season. We love bears in ON. People have to take their chances, after all, the bears were here first. A further complication, North of the French River there is no open hunting season for anything during the summer.

Again with the guns in the Ontario bush and bears. If you are stopped by a CO in the bush with any firearm you are assumed to be hunting. If you have no hunting licence for game that is in season, you're charged. If you have a firearm that is not suitable for game that is in season, you're charged.
Varmints like coyotes, ground hogs and crows have no hunting season, but you must have a small game licence to hunt them. A shotgun with buckshot, while not great for varmints, won't get you in trouble as long as you have a small game hunting licence. Don't even mention Yogi(who isn't interested in you) or self-defense if you get stopped.
There is a hunting season for rabbits in Ont.

Self-protection in the bush

I once asked a CO if it was legal in Alberta to carry a rifle in the bush for protection against predators and he said it was indeed legal. He added, however, that the shooter had better be able to prove such self-defence against predators if he was forced to shoot one, such as a grizzly or black bear, for which the shooter had no valid licence.

Has anyone here in God's Country any knowledge or experience in this regard?
