Protection while camping

If you go camping in dangerous parts of Canada like the Yukon or whitehorse, is there an ATT that will allow you to bring your hand gun with you from Manitoba to Yukon (where I am camping) and then further allow you to carry that handgun while on the camping trip? I have a .303 Lee Enfield, but I'd way rather shoot at a bear with my USP .45 Auto, all though both weapons would do a large scale amount of damage to poor ol' smokey:evil:, whatta'ya guys know about that?

I'm pretty sure you can only transport too & from pistol shooting clubs. unless you are moving or selling it. They wouldn't let you carry a handgun in the woods. Cant even hunt with them :(

But thats just my opinion to find out for sure call 1 800 731-4000

Ya thats what I thought at first, but from looking around on this site, I found out you can aquire an authorization to carry for that sole purpose, for protection of life, i understand armed bank guards fall under that category, so why can't a civilian fall under that class when wanting to protect life agaisnt a 800LB rouge grizzly:p

The only way you'll get an ATC (Authorization to carry) and you're not Brinks guard is to be a geologist/trapper/prospector in a remote location. You need to apply and prove need.

It's possible, but HIGHLY unlikely you'd get approval for a remote camping trip.

Oh, and a .303 will do FAAAAR more damage to a bear than a .45ACP. I wouldn't even consider a .45 for bear defence. I would say .357 mag at a MINIMUM, and better yet would be a .44 mag, .454 Casull or .480 Ruger. Just my opinion - and most likely useless data, since you will NOT get an ATC for camping (I'd almost be willing to put money on it).

I would echo Canucklehead's comments and add that there is a US Fish and Wildlife publication out which evaluates a wide variety of guns for bear protection. Handguns in general come out a distant second or third and the only gun which even comes close was the .44 mag. I don't belive the Casull or Ruger were available at the time of the evaluation.

Short non-restricted shotgun would be much more effective.

thought you guys might like to see this "bear gun"

That short shotty is insane! I can't imagine what it would be like to fire a slug out of. With it's incredibily short OAL, how can it be be a non-restricted?

Jesseglobe: Unfortunately in our country the ATCs for wilderness protection are only issued as part of your work and not for playing

Moncoon:
You are right, that report didn't include anything larger than the 44 mag so the the 454 Casull, 460 and 500 S&W, 480 Ruger and 475 Linebaugh etc were not tested. Those are much more formidable tools than the 44 mag.

Canfire: The little Dlask 870 kicks a lot like my 454 Casull but with a little less or the really sharp fast 'bite'. Ballistically I can shoot a 390 grain bullet from my 454 at around 1250 - 1300 fps and the standard 1 oz (439 gr) slug out of the shorty at about 1250-1300fps .....hmmm :) Can't remember teh exact velocities but they are posted her on CGN somewhere, but you get the idea.

Cheers

Short shottie with slugs is the best we can hope to do here in this country. Probably safer if other persons are within range of a handgun caliber.

I had a face to face with a good sized momma black bear that was thinking of snacking on my family.

Since I was in a Prov. park I didn't have any type of firearm. So I let her have it with the bear spray.

Luckily it worked and she bolted or else they would be using the empty can to collect my body parts in.
