[Night Vision Info] Fake Qioptiq Lenses on the Market

Qioptiq, a branch of Excelitas Technologies in Singapore has been a staple of the nightvision industry for about two decades. They have historically been one of the largest producers of lenses for Mil-Spec nightvision optics in the world until about a year or two ago when they wound down their operations. When they ended their operations there was a major shortage of standard Mil-Spec optics so most of the nightvision industry needed to find a solution in order to continue selling devices. We took advantage of our great relationship with Rochester Precision Optics and didn't miss a beat, while also exploring non Mil-Spec options such as AAPO and Salvo.

During that time, we also came across some unbranded lenses purported to be from Qioptiq/Excelitas, however they did not match the profile we were familiar with, and the optical performance while reasonable, did not meet the same performance standards as the genuine Qioptiq lenses we had used. They produced an image with slightly lower resolution and more distortion than geniuine Qioptiq/Excelitas.

We had a small number of these lenses pass through our hands in early 2022 that were sold to us as being Excelitas/Qioptiq. If you received a set from us with these lenses, please reach out to us and we will get you squared away with a lens replacement. The particular lens pictured was sold as being Qioptiq by another vendor in Canada.

PSA: If you mess with your font color its hard to read if you're using the dark theme of the website. Regular text turns white if you use dark theme, but other colors just stay the same.

Why not out the vendor?
Simply put we did not seek to put this out as a hit piece but rather a PSA for customers to check their devices and then reach out to their original vendor for rectification. However Cold Harbour has publicly said that they sold these lenses over the past couple years listing them on their website as Qioptiq US Milspec (they are neither and to date no one in the industry has identified who exactly is making these lenses).

We had a few Night Vision units (we estimate no more than 5) that we built with these. It took us quite some time to verify 100% that these were fake as vendors and sources are hard to nail down in the industry. Unfortunately our tracking of sold devices from the time we sold these includes a lot of components but we were not able to identify specifically who received these lenses. Anyone who received a unit of these is encouraged to reach out to us for a no charge replacement to the correct Milspec lenses.

Many American vendors have also been selling these lenses in devices, but as they cannot export to Canada it is unlikely that anyone here would have received them.
