So I happened across the PTR91 rifle on an American site and was wondering if they are allowed in Canada.

The rifle is a .308 German G3 ---> BUT had the action removed before export from Germany and an American company built SEMI-auto ONLY actions for them making them Semi's for public use.

O M G. these laws, make NO sense at all. it is a COMPLETE semi-automatic ONLY trigger group.

unbelievable.

That's the specific purpose of 12(5) in particular. Since G3s, FALs, AKs, etc. already were banned in their full auto and converted auto formats, the libs took it one step further and made a list via Order in Council that specifically named certain designs as prohibited so that semi auto only versions of them were prohibited as well. That list became locked into law as section 12(5) in the Firearms Act.

Isn't this rifle a variant of the HKG3. The FAMAE SG542-1, 308 WIN? It's sold in Canada.

The 542-1 has a completely different action (long stroke piston, with a rotating bolt) than the G3 and variants (roller delayed blowback action), so no, it's not a G3 variant. Closest thing to a G3 type roller delayed action that is non-restricted would be the H&K SL-6 and SL-7 rifles.
