I got to shoot a PTR91 in Texas a few weeks ago. I still can't get over how much I enjoyed shooting it.

I'd love to get my hand on one, but I've been reading that it's prohibited up here. What a surprise.

So my question is what rifle can I get that will be the as close to the PTR as possible.. obviously I'd like it to be in 308.

Famae SG542 is likely the closest you will get without blowing the budget. There are other offerings that people will likely suggest, but I thing the 542 will have the closest weight and handling characteristics to what you are looking for.

I've seen the SG542. Looks nice. I'm just not crazy of spending that kind of money on so much plastic. But I have to admit I've never handled one so my opinion is based on pictures and videos.

I'll have to try and find one to shoot at some point. Anyone on here have one and can give me their opinion on finish ?

Finish on the FAMAE will equal that of the PTR-91 that you fired down South. I agree that the FAMAE is the closest you are going to get in Canada wjthout a 12 (3) or 12 (5) endorsement on your PAL...

The only plastic on the famae is the handguard, pistol grip, and buttstock. Same parts as the G3/PTR91

Oh. I hadn't realized that. I know the PTR did have some plastics on it. But For some reason, the pics of the FAMAE that I saw looked like it was full of plastics. But then again, if my memory serves me right, I think the PTR had a metal forearm

I've held one, felt nice and solid to me, as others have stated, not much plastic.

....and you can't even shoot a 12(3/5) at the range!

It's pretty nuts isn't it, more inconsistencies in our laws. I can understand 12(2), but the others???, and 12(6) is ok...one small win.

Just to add an exclamation mark to the above...if you put it in a Sporter Stock and call it the SL7 it's just fine. I think you'd be better off with the FAMAE, probably much cheaper and finding one is easy.

Thanks everyone. Now I really need to find someone local who has a SG542 so that I can try it out. Maybe CRAFAM has some in stock that I can handle. I guess I now have another reason to go see what's new in there.
