just purchased a pu91/30 ex sniper rifle, made by ishvesk arsnel and dated 1944 dont think it saw servise as a sniper rifle being dated so close to the end of the war and in excellent condition.Dose anyone know why they removed sniper parts from these rifles and returned them to regular infintary rifles.where would you find a scope and mount and bent bolt to return it to what it once was, or should i leave it as it is .Would be a very interesting project to say the least but this be considered a bubba job or a restoration

If your rifle is indeed an ex sniper then chances are since it was made in 1944 it spent some service during the war as a sniper. It may have been used to train new snipers somehwere behind the front lines or it could have been right up there doing what it was designed to do. There is no way to tell with milsurps. After the war the soviets removed all snipers parts (scope/mount/bent bolt etc...) and returned them to infantry rifles. Personally I wont get into the remounting of optics and everything else as it is not an easy feat from what I hear. Shoot it first and see how you like it! They are excellent rifles :D congrats!

Great repro scope and mount can be had, original scope/mount are around if you can afford. Ex-sniper had the hole plugged with screw and welded in place. Somes are more hard than others to drill and tap. The job can be done but you must take the time and have the right tools to do it. I wanted a PU sniper so i bought a nice repro but i still have the idea getting an ex-sniper and re-sniper it. If you want to put back optic on your, shoot it before to see how's the accuracy then you will see if you want to spend for optics.

I had one, I got it fairly cheap at an auction and never got around to re-snipering it.

I traded it for a No1 Enfield and a Finn 91/30 :D

the guy who got it re-snipered it, (another CGN member)

I have herd that befour but i cant see what that as to do with acuracy might be a case for the myth busters.I contacted westrifle i dont think they have any scopes and mounts in stock right now .Dose anyone have any experiance removing the welded in screws, is there any way toturn them out or should i just drill them trough the middle and re thread them if anyone as any tips it would be greatly appreciated

those welds can be tough or easy

The weld is harder than the reciever. there is no way to say how hard. so really two choices. The first is spot annealing. take a one inch diameter steel rod and turn the end down to at taper that finishes slightly smaller than the screw hole. heat the small end of the rod to cherry red and hold it against the screw hole until it is dead cold. Then do the other hole repeat until both welds drill easily. second option get some small carbide endmills and slowly drill out the weld, use oil wear safety glasses. go slow so you don't chip the endmills. i hope this helps. you might be able to just drill them out it just depends on how hard they are. enjoy
