Hey all;

Just wondering if there's any known supplier for Puff-Lon in Canada, or what some of you might be using as a 'filler' when using certain powders in cases that are big... I've had issues with a fast powder in my -06 (H335 (i think) either doesn't catch (had it happen 3X) or sends 150gr bullets out the spout on the end of 10" of bright orange flame... and that powder's been sitting since the third mess I cleaned out of the chamber... which was also a lesson: just because there's published load data doesn't make it a good choice.

That was my rookie mistake, later was told that powder was meant for .223 :redface:

And gonna be loading for my .45/70 build, and I'd like to know if that stuff is available up here. Gonna be looking for molds too eventually. Because I don't have enough 'hobbies' and want to cast my own...

Dacron filler used for pillows, quilts etc. Check your local thrift stores. I got a lifetime supply for $2.00 a while ago.
Dacron is heat shrinkable and wont burn or melt. It just shrinks to near nothing on the way out of the barrel.

Believe it or not, dryer lint works good too, as does toilet paper(new), some powders are better then other for reduced loads and don't require any fillers, Trail Boss, AA5744, IMR4759, the 4198s, RL-7, AA2015, even 4895 at 60% of cap. or more. Ball powders, such as Poster mentioned (H-335) do not make acceptable reduced loads, don't do it!!

With all the various powders available today there is really no need for fillers in the 45-70..
But if you want Pufflon just contact the manuf. and they'll send it to you..
I don't see Pufflon as being a restricted item unless the rules have changed since I ordered mine..

Firstly, the OP was asking about the 45-70, for later use. Any of the medium burning rifle powders will work for mid to heavy loads in the 45-70. H335 should fit that class. But most of them won't work too well at very light loads. 4198 is a powder that will work well at quite low velocity, as well as near the top velocities, especially in lighter bullets.
For heavy cast bullets, light-medium to close to maximum velocity, you could use 4198. 4895 would be better for the heavier loadings. I have not used 3031, just because I don't have any on hand, but it may be the best for heavy loads.
What is likely the best filler for light loads with the 45-70 is cheap and available at your friendly, local building supply store.
