Ok guys. Have a Savage axis not the one with accutrigger. I am original owner. Bought 3 or 4 years ago. Hunted with it a couple time shot targets nothing too heavy like maybe 2 boxes at most down the pipe. Any ways put boyds stock on and had missing issues the bolt would not pick up the shell, it would pick the first one up never the second and maybe 3rd and on and on well you get the hint. Anyways broke the original clip trying too modify it. went back too orginal stock and new clip and still same dam thing. The shells look like they do not go high enough and also sit too far back in clip for bolt too slide forward.. Tried repositiong shells in clip too no avail trying too get it working for my wife this year.... The bolt is kinda sloppy too but heard thats true for savage .. like too say never had issues the first year of shooting it thank you for reading...

What caliber?

I'm going to guess you have a long action caliber, and your bolt baffle is turned the wrong way. Just below the bolt head is a piece that turns, and one side is a bit longer. That piece contacts the bolt stop. If you have the long side contacting the bolt stop it will not pick up long action cartridges properly because the bolt can't travel far enough back.

If you don't know any better, it's easy to fk this up when reinstalling the bolt.

It’s a savage axis. I’d really have to be pissed at my wife to make her shoot one of those. Take it to a store and trade it off on a nice stainless Tikka in 6.5x55.

Yes, it is I sent a pm too him thank him. Its a great gun for us for deer and moose also bear. To be honest it shoots great and 3/4 inch groups at 100 yrds. so its set up for 1 and half inch above center at 100yrds

You will always have time to get a better rifle - hunting season is short, use what you've got and get out there! Glad you figured it out and good luck this season!

There are a lot of decent people here with a lot of great guns to look at and drool over - my dad was married with three kids by 22 (broke as hell on a single income with a young family). When I go to the range and shoot something worth more than he made in a month (and trust me it wasn't much) I remember the beat up .30-30 that filled the freezer in my childhood, I remember him going without a deer license when I was of legal age (14) so he could buy tags for me and my older brother, I remember him walking the bush with a stick and putting me on point with his rifle. It is good to remember how lucky we are to have money and choices - use that "cheap" rifle and have fun - ignore anyone who tells you different.

This I agree with.
If I can only remember how many times I met other hunters in the woods and looked at there rifles. When they look at mine they say, you should buy a really nice rifle for yourself after looking at my $300 Mossberg. What they don't know is that I have rifles in my gun safe worth triple even four times the cost of there nice rifles.
Shoot the rifle and enjoy it. It's where the bullet hits that count.

Awesome thank you very much. I have a 270. It works great now much appricated

Hey no problem. Glad I could help. I too hunt with an axis in 270, and for the price I paid you couldn't get a better rifle.

I figured this out after buying a used axis for cheap due to feeding issues. The store said it probably needs a new magazine (so even they didn't know what was wrong). A bit of googling came up with this problem/solution.

A deer doesn't know if it's a $300 rifle or a $3000rifle. Puts food in the freezer who cares. My Stevens 200 will out shoot just about anything out there.

I just learned something about the Savage Axis today! (that fix) My only Savage centerfire is a Model 10, and while I've been tempted to "upgrade" it a few times, it just shoots to well for that to make sense. CGN has been the root cause of some over-spending in the last few years...but I love threads like these because they mirror my own sensibilities for the most part. When I look back over the years, it's the memories that stand-out, not the piece of gear I was using.

I don't have a lot of high priced firearms, so maybe nothing to compare to; but with my handloads, my Axis in .223 holds .5MOA all day long. Yes the stock is flimsy, yes the trigger is garbage, but the thing just shoots. I paid $300 for it a couple of years ago during a WSS boxing week sale. It has yet to disappoint me, and I can't bring myself to sell it.

I have a Stevens .25-06 and it shoots 100gr and 117gr bullets into 0.75". (Handloads that I copied from a box of factory ammo in regards to overall length. I didnt do any load development to see which seating depth was best). I have 4 different sub $400 rifles that shoot under 1 moa with almost everything. The shooter and scope are sometimes more important than the particular gun for accuracy if you ask me.
