I have both a Rossi M92 .454 Mag. w/20" barrel and the .44 Mag. w/16" tube, and
love 'em both. If your doing cowboy shootin' then the .454 Mag. makes a great choice
as you can use the cheaper .45 Colt loads. WARNING!! After firing a box of .45 Colts
through a .454 Mag. you must clean the chamber before using .454 ammo because the
.45 colt brass is .100" shorter and can leave a ring of fouling in the chamber. Firing a
factory .454 Mag load may cause a dangerous over pressure and damage the gun or
worse! This has happened on numerous occasions.
You should get into reloading because it's economical and fun, as well as rewarding
when you taylor a specific load for your particular gun and have it shooting its' best.
Get the Lyman 49th Handloading Handbook and study it well. The Lee Reloading Manual
is a great book too.
For hunting, the .44 Mag and .454 Mag are good enough for the biggest game on earth
if the right loads are used and the bullet is placed in the right spot at a realistic shooting
distance, say no shots over 100yds. Hope this helps a bit.
