As the title says, I am looking for options for a good, cheap, pump action shotgun. Something that can be easily carried with other gear. I was looking at the Remington 870 but they seem to only be carried with long barrels.
Mossberg was another option but I don't know much about them.

I was hoping to keep the price down as this is probably the only use it will see.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Forgive my cluelessness about flyfishing, never done it, but is the shot gun for 2 person flyfishing where one person yanks the fish out of the water up into the air and the other person shoots it with the shotgun, sort of like trap or skeet shooting but with fish?

Do you yell "pull" ?

Or is it more like grenade fishing where you shoot into the school of fish and then net the ones that float up?

What about something like this: https://www.canadaammo.com/product/detail/dominion-arms-grizzly-shotgun-8-5/ with this stock https://www.canadaammo.com/product/detail/grizzly-remington-870-folding-stock/

That would be pretty small and easy to pack up.

And restricted.
I'd go with a .44mag Ranchhand and accept a bit less power in a lighter package. Full stock if needed.

I too was thinking this would be awesome sport but have come to think Maybe he is just worried about bears. In which case this should be a bear defense thread.

If I were fly- fishing the back country on a regular basis, I would consider the Remington 870 "Home Defense" Model. Hardwood stock, blue finish.
It comes with an 18-1/2" smooth bore barrel and in either a 4-shot (Order # 25559 ) or 6 shot (Order # 81197) capacity, and can easily have a sling attached.
Fill 'er to the nutz with quality 00 buckshot loads and fish with little more piece of mind. Most 870's can benefit from a little professional chamber polishing right from
the get go at your local gunsmiths. Make sure you put it through it's paces for reliable functioning BEFORE you may have to use it.

The late well-known Alberta "Forest Trunk Road" fly-fisherman Barry Mitchell carried a similar sawed-off Ithaca 37 pump filled with buckshot in the back country for years.

I have both the Dlask shorty 8.5" and a Rossi Ranch Hand in 44 mag. The ranch hand for me is the handier of the two, ammo is much easier to pack and likely to be more accurate at all distances. It won't be as "rugged" as the shorty though. I'd have no reservations beating the crap out of the dlask and not worrying about babying it all the time. The Rossi is one I'd handle with more care as its a nice looking rifle and would want to keep it that way so I'd likely be more gentle with it. I have a scabbard that fits both and have carried each one slung over one shoulder, really convenient and keeps the hands free while still have easy access to the firearm if needed.

Pistol grip Mossberg 500 JIC, 12GA 18" bbl, 6-shot capacity slung over your back

It's a Mariner 500 like Remington's 870 Marine Magnum.....great for water sports.

Check out the 500 JIC Mariner..... Bear banger in the chamber followed by 5 shots of Federal 1 1/4oz 12GA Magnum rifled slugs @ 1,600 fps.

You'll be safe ;)

What are the statistics on fly fishermen attacked by bears in Alberta?

50 000 bear attacks per year.

Seriously who cares? I'd rather not become a statistic.

I also recommend checking corwin. They've got some affordable O/U shorties too if that tickles your fancy (i know I'd like one for a fishing gun) or the aforementioned cheap pump guns at 14 and 18"
