Purchase hand gun

I live in an area where the coyote population is getting out of hand. At night all we hear is their yelping and in the morning their tracks are all around my property.


I have a bb Gun and a pellet rifle, but I might as well throw crackers at them, a friend lent me his .22 rifle, but it was too difficult to get it aimed at the coyotes . The bb gun seemed easy to aim but did not deter them at all.

I feel I need to buy a .22 hand gun but need a license to do so.

How difficult is this to do?

Its not that hard, first you have to take a firearms course, then apply for your PAL. After that you have to take a restricted firearms course and apply for a restricted PAL. Acctually you don't have to apply for the first one but you have to take both courses to get a restricted PAL. Then you go to the gun dealer, pick out your pistol, and after you get your transfer permit you can take it home, it will ussually take a few months depending on where you live. The only thing you can use your pistol for is target practice( usually at an approved range) or competitive shooting. Your not allowed to hunt with them, or use them in self defence.
 
You also need to be aware that borrowing your friend's rifle without a license is against the law and could land you and your friend in a lot of trouble.

First off, trying to shoot any animal with something that is not lethal enough to humanely kill it even though it's vermin is inhumane and unethical IMHO.

Not to be the law pusher but seeing as gun owners are under a microscope these days, do you have a firearms license ie PAL for your friend to be lending you his .22? Hopefully at least it was .22WMR unless it was at close range with a .22LR? Do you have a hunting license?

IIRC, you may be allowed to dispatch vermin if they prove to be a nuisance or safety concern without a hunting license on private property if the bylaws in your area allow discharging a firearm BUT you are still required to have a valid PAL. Possession of a firearm without a PAL is a criminal offense and one that is not taken lightly.

As for the handgun, you CANNOT hunt with a handgun in Canada, period. Handguns and other restricted firearms are only allowed to be discharged at CFO approved ranges.
 
I should also add that in order to get a pistol you have to become a member of a gun club. While I think anyone that has never handled guns before should definetly take a firearms course, don't let anyone ever tell you that there are not severe restrictions on gun ownership in Canada, cause there sure is!
 
With all respect Eastont, Hunting and shooting of a Pistol anywhere other than at an approved range is ILLEGAL in Ontario, and anywhere else in this Country. To be eligible to purchase a pistol, the process to aquire one will take on average of 6 months from start to finish. You will need to take a 2 day course, undergo an application process that is rather invasive and not have had any psych, criminal or other issues. Then you will need to be a member of a gun club and undergo a further set of training and up to a dozen probationary shoots with a range officer.

"Borrowing" your friends firearm is a serious criminal act, without the appropriate licence, I would suspect that given your disregard for the laws of this country THE LAW ABBIDING FIREARMS COMMUNITY this board represents will not want to have a lot to do with you.

I suspect you maybe a member of the media trying to highlight "how easy" it is to obtain firearms in this Country, But I can assure you its not. Those that have been given the privilage in this country to own firearms are not just Law abiding, but statistically amoungst the most law abiding. If you have any questions, please feel to PM me.

Borrowing a firearm when you're not licensed is illegal.
If I were you, I would not be admitting an illegal action
on a public forum.
 
Thanks for all the replies, it sounds that what I thought was a straight forward and easy process is not.

I have returned the .22 rifle, because as I said it is too difficult to get it aimed at 10 feet.

Very few of the gun holders around where I live have licenses mostly because they have been hunting for years and they all disagree with any type of government registration.

But I will look into the procedure to get a PAL.

When you do get your PAL, invest in a double barrel 10 gauge, use 3 1/2" magnum 00 Buck, and stay within that 10 ft. You should do OK with the 'yotes.

Just get one off ebay. I ordered one last week for my 6 year old son first thing we did was spray paint it black. user name "jstinturdo" has a great selection on this page NO LICENCE REQUIRED!!
 
difficult at 10 feet??...If you can't hit the 'yotes at 3 meters with a gun,try a baseball bat or a No#9 golf iron...swing,fast jump forward-hit! Yote is history. Might not work if you're in a wheelchair,tho.
Note: both mentioned options above are registration free!
