Just purchased an early Ithaca 37... but the CFC hasn't approved the transfer yet because it has a 4 digit serial #... does this make any sense to anybody? Or can someone explain?

I'll see if I can pick it up tomorrow, or if there is still a hold up...

After I take possession, I will be posting pics and trying to confirm the date of manufacture, model, and patina...

Happy nonetheless.

A 4 digit serial number for an Ithaca 37 is weird. They made millions of these; and virtually ever police force in North America was issued them, as well as the military, and it was the shotgun of choice for sportsmem for many years. I suspect this is the reason for the hold up.

In any event, I think you made a good decision in buying this gun, as it is a top quality piece of workmanship, and should be around long after all the aluminum framed guns are scrapped.

I hear ya. I bought a K98k from here (not going to mention the sellers name) but the CFC has been registering it for the last two years. The said seller failed to mention it to me.

The 37's started production in 1937, with a 4 digit serial #, like the one I got. It seems that you can guestimate a range in age by the number of digits (at least for the early ones). I am looking at getting another, it has six digits and was produced in 1955.
