Purchased my first Leupold rifle scope.

I finally got around to replacing my vintage 1980 Japanese made Tasco rifle scope on my go to hunting rifle & replaced it with a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40mm. Went with the Leupold dual dovetail bases and rings. Got it all mounted, torque to spec and bore sighted on my Savage model 11 chambered in .308 Win today. This is my first Leupold scope. I almost went with a Vortex Viper but decided on the Leupold instead. Clean classy look, nice glass and lighter in weight than the Viper. I think I made the right choice.

Oh, I haven't dumped the Tasco. I have a 1950, Winchester model 70, 30/06 that is in need of a scope. A 'modern' scope for a older rifle. :cool:
 
I have exactly the same scope mounted on my Ruger M77 varmint in .308. It has always performed excellently for me and I'm talking over 20 yrs. plus. I hope you are as happy with yours as I am with mine.
 
I think you will be happy with that choice. Both Leupold and Vortex have excellent warranties, but with the Leupold, you'll probably never need it.
 
Congrats. I just recently sold a VX-3 4.5-14x40 that shot great for me for a number of years. I did send it back once because there was some dust in the scope that annoyed me but other than that it functioned fine.
 
Thanks for the replies. I won't have time to get to the range until early next week but I have been scoping out the crows sitting in nearby trees.
 
I have an old leupold 34 years old , I flipped a quad over in a river , tumbled down a rocky hill with it on my back , drove over it with my quad and shock it up in the scabbard on horse and quad 1000s of miles . It finally lost its seal and fogged in temps, I sent it to korths with above statement and had it back in a month , good to go fo another 30 . I'm probably more careful now
 
I have three Leupold VX III's in 3.5x10x40 and one in 1.5x5. No issues, and I don't expect any. Also have a Redfield Revenge/Rampage 4x12x40 which has gave me no issues either. It actually has been a very good scope for the money.

I'm a fan of lower powered scopes for hunting. 1.75-5x, fixed 4x, 2-7x. Heck, even a 3-9x40mm. I went with the 3.5-10x because it was NIB and I was helping a buddy out. Turned out to be a win, win. 3.5x, not too much for forest, 10x on the ridges and across cut blocks.

Over a 20 year period, I owned a few dozen Leupold scopes, but these days, I don't own any. There are several other choices these days that offer as good or better value for the price.
 
From being in the business I have access to most optic lines and have a smattering of makes on the several guns I own however there is one line that is over represented compared to any other and that is Leupold. I often remove Leupold scopes from used guns sold or traded to our store and either use them on a current rifle or save them for a future project. I have never had any problems with the Leupold scopes I own. Of course we see the occasional Leupold fail that a customer has brought in but they have been repaired in short order . Phil.

I rarely turn my scope above 6x even while prairie hunting, but 10x is nice for load development at the range. Nice to finally hear about a VX-3i getting used. I've been eyeing them up but haven't seen many real user reviews even though they've been out almost a year.

I partially concur. Only partially because the only Leupold scope I replaced was on a HB target rifle. Bought a NF just for the target range only.

The OP discusses what he up scaled his hunting rifle optics into. And IMHO 99% of us would have done the exact same thing as him, when able to afford better hunting optics.
