Hey all.

Im still in the process of getting my RPAL (waiting for my test results still) but I heard even after you get your license you have to wait weeks if you want to purchase..... I live in toronto, and was wondering, if buying restricted, what is the process, how long does it take to approve? and does it matter if im buying privately and locally?

This process seems to be one big put off.... Non stop waiting :mad:

thanks.

I just went through the entire process and the waiting is the hardest part for sure. If you dot all the i's and cross the t's on everything you will be done in no time. Its best to look for a range now if you dont have one already and join up and start taking the range safety course or training they provide there. Once you send away your stuff to miramichi you can decide on a gun and if you buy it from a dealer they will usually hold it for you until your rpal arrives and then transfer it to you. That works out great if you find one you want and dont want to lose it in the case that its a good deal that may not last. Once you get your gun you have to wait to take it to your range until you get your att for transporting it there but thats ok. Once the range finishes your safety or training they will apply for the att for you and then you can use your gun. Most ranges should have a few range guns you can learn and train on in the mean time. The transfer of the restricted shouldnt take very long but that can vary depending on many things. I assume you are joining a range. Privately or locally shouldnt really matter but I have not purchased privately so another member could better answer that one. You can purchase as soon as you get your licence but the transfer can take a bit but usually not more than a few weeks but it can vary a lot. The rush to purchase a restricted isnt as important as getting in a range and doing the safety course so that when you do purchase it you have somewhere to take it. You need a restricted in your name to get the att for the range also, they wont issue an att until you have a restricted so the gun has to come first.(att to take your gun to the range is what i mean in the post, a temporary att will be issued allowing you to pick up your gun or have it delivered when you get it transfered, but the range one will be long term att)

Thanks exactly what the anti's want, you gotta be patient and not give into their asshat games.

I had my RPAL for years before getting a handgun, and owned a couple rifles and a shotgun before buying a restricted. The process from sale to my doorstep took about one month for my first handgun. My second was a little over a week.

EDIT, got damnit, I replied under my brothers account again..... grrr.

Thanks for the help beetlejuice. Yeah I found a range and am going this week to sign up for the safety course which is at the end of April. I should have the whole range thing cleared up by the time my license comes in the mail.

To onagoth. Yeah i know what you mean. Im not going to let it deter me, but its just annoying. It must definitely stop a lot of folks from getting their license.

One more question though.

When the CFC website says "license issued" can you get a gun at that time or do you have to physically have your license. The way I see it is, the CFC has your license as issued, so I dont see why this would be a problem.

let me know.

The Store will want to see your license picture and all. If you have the # of the license you could technically do a private sale say if you set one up on here through the EE but I wouldn't recommend taking possession of one with out having your card. But i could just be paranoid.

Once your licence has been issued by CFC, you can/could buy firearms as long as you have the licence # and a piece of ID with your photo on it. Most of the dealer transfer will be done online or over the phone, your PAL status with CFC will be active once it is saying been issued. If a local dealer turns you down, you can always order through a dealer with web ordering service, all you need is put in your license # and city of birth.
