Spent some time over the last 2 weeks stripping, sanding, staining and sealing my PU sniper. Made the decision to do this based on how much shellac was flaking off, and how horrible that made it look. Now its properly sealed and will be better preserved for my kids to shoot one day - I think it looks a ton better as well!

Here are a couple quick before and after videos, the first shows before and after stripping but before stain/tung oil. The second second video is true before and after. Hope you enjoy!

Why would you sand a military surplus sniper? Shellac is super easy to apply and buff without damaging the value.
I didn't take a belt sander to it, in fact the shellac was hiding the majority of stamps and markings on the stock, would never have seen them if I didn't do this. With this new finish they are visible and legible as opposed to invisible.

As for value I don't plan on selling this, so not a factor.

Nice job OP!!!!

Please post exactly what you used to strip it, sand it with, and refinish it. Enquiring minds want to know - AND I want to make my 91/30 infantry rifle look like that (for practice so when I buy a Mosin sniper, I can make it look like it just came out of Tula or Izhevsk!).

I'll have a how-to video up next week on my channel

Nice work !

A couples years ago I bought another stock for my PU repro, fitted it to the rifle and refinished.
I sold the rifle a long time ago with the original stock. I still have the refinished stock+handguard.
I think it was pretty nice !
