Mods, I really couldn't figure out where to put this, please move as u see fit.

I like the look of a shoulder rifle (m14, mini14) with a red dot sight mounted about 1/2 way up along its stock. Curious, what are the benefits of the red dot placement so far forward? Is it better to mount a red dot so far forward or back futher towards your eye?

Doesn't matter where - rearward blocks the view but gives a bigger window - opposite forward - its for balance - wherever it balances for you - :)

I mounted the red dot on my CX4 Storm carbine as far forward as possible because it gave better, more comfortable access to the cocking handle.

Red dots are designed to be shot with two eyes open.I find the further back I have it the more I catch myself closing the off eye.The further forward I mount it the more I keep both eyes open and looking around.

Yep

I think he was referring to the balance between FOV and reticle display/size.

TDC

The balance is to get the ideal view which varies as to how dominant the dominant eye is. The bindon concept works well - as the dot moves tracking a target - both eyes open - you see a dot projected on the target . When the track stops , the dominant eye takes over and you see the scope image more pronounced. Mounting forward gives a smaller scope image making it easier to use both eyes. On my combat shot guns I mount as far forward as practicable. On more precision weapons I like to use my dominant eye for precise shooting , closing the other eye , the red dot is mounted closer to the dominant eye - like a target scope. The bindon concept still works in that set up - just not as well . If your dominant eye is not your sighting eye - you will have to experiment as to placement - probably closer would be better.

:sniper:;)

Wow, alot of things I never would have considered!

Now to throw a little bit more fuel on the fire, due to the huge cost of a real CompM2 or CompM3 Aimpoint, how do the cheaper brands (Tasco and the like) stack up?

Again, just looking for info, pro's and con's ..

dont buy the cheap stuff

The cheaper stuff sux. I have tried all of the cheap stuff tasco etc and every single one eventually failed. Even had an eotech fail (replaced free by wolverine ) Never had an aimpoint fail and surprise never had a cheap aimpoint clone fail either. - Get the smallest moa dot you can - the big ones have less versatility - u cant make them smaller when u need to, the small ones bloom bigger when u crank em up. :)
