I love the gun....I love how the heavy barrel looks....but I HATED how front heavy the thing was!

Sent the barrel out to my machinist, and had him turn down the tube to 5/8", and thread the base to accept a 1" aluminum shroud. The net result is the look of the 1" barrel, but without the weight. The muzzle sits in a little pocket at the end of the shroud, so the overall pkg is 1/8" longer than stock, but the pocket ensures A: The muzzle of the barrel and hole in the shroud are touching (no sound reduction) and B: if the gun is dropped, the shroud won't bend and cover the muzzle.

Way better now!

The cost? Dunno....he's a friend.
It saved quite a bit of weight, not sure but I'd say a couple of LBS.

Can we do that?

:) We are still looking at the details, but it should be OK.

Another route you can take is by putting a Ruger 10/22 carbon fibre barrel on the R22. This gives it the bull barrel look and makes it really light.
I have seen this done to one gun and it looked fantastic.
The barrel was installed by a gunsmith, but I do not think that it needed any altering.

The R22 uses a 1x16 threaded barrel, secured with a Savage style lock nut. Ruger 10/22 barrels use a tapered cone fit, with the max diameter of the bull barrels being .920.

Unless you make up a threaded bushing, I can't see the Ruger barrel working.

The real big question of cousre is to see how accuracy was impacted after the barrel lost that much weight. Mine shoots 1/2" at 50yds with Eley Target on sand bags with a 24x scope and I would sure hate to loose that.

with red dot I see on the picture, 1/2" groups @ 50 yards are out of the question - red dot itself projects about 3" across.

Canuck223 you are right.
The barrel is threaded on the end with a cover piece that has a cut out for the 10/22. This was replaced with a new one that was threaded to match the R 22.
My memory is just playing tricks on me. The thing that did not have to be altered was the from port on the carbon fibre barrel which they were afraid was going to aim down once the barrel was installed.
I am not sure if the gunsmith had to turn down the barrel at all to get it to fit, but it was installed and it does work.
Any gunsmith can tell you that anything can be done as long as they have the proper tools, time and you have a lot of money.
