Putting a G22 slide and barrel on a G17 Frame?

I tried the CGN search function (such that it is) to find existing threads on this subject, but I had no luck. I cannot be the first person to ask this but here goes...

Can I put the slide and barrel off a G22 .40 cal directly on to my G17 9mm frame and shoot .40 cal bullets without modifying the G17 frame and without doing any damage? I think the ejector may be a problem. Can I use the G17 mags with .40 cal cartridges? My guess is no.

Thanks in advance for the info.

I have done the reverse. Put a G17 barrel in a G22. Didn't have to change the slide. The extractor/ejector was not an issue. The 9mm mags won't take 40 cal rounds however. Whether the G17 frame is up to the .40 rounds I can't answer but I am sure you will hear soon whether or not it can be done.:)

You definetly cannot use the G17 (9mm) mags with the .40S&W cartridge. The reverse is possible (G22.40 mags with 9mm cartridge).

As mentioned above, G17barrel in a G22 slide/frame is absolutely fine but the reverse is not acceptable. The ejector will give u nothing but grief.

Before I bought 9mm mags for my conversion I tried the 40 cal mags. They didn't work very well at all. The first two rounds usually worked but after that it was totally unreliable. It was easier just to buy a couple of 9mm mags.

I'd say my question is answered. Thanks for all the input. To have a multi-caliber Glock I'm gonna have to:

1) Sell my minty G17 on EE for $500
2) KEEP my Advantage Arms 17-22 .22lr conversion kit
3) Buy a G22 .40 cal from sight sponser Blue Line Activities for $639.99 plus GST and shipping
4) Buy 2 9mm Glock mags
5) Buy a Lone Wolf G22 9mm Conversion barrel
6) Buy a Lone Wolf G22 .357 Sig barrel

Then I should have a Glock that shoots .22lr, 9mm, .357 Sig and .40cal. Four pistols in one????

BTDT ...
NOTE: the OLDER 9 MM Glock frames did NOT have the extra pin for the locking lugs ...
these would NOT be recommended for a .40 S&W conversion as the frame would flex too much under the extra load of the more powerful .40 cartridge.

However,
the newer 9 MM frames that have the extra locking pin should be virtually identical to the .40 frames, except for ejectors, and would work well for a 9/40 conversion ... except that you will have to buy [ and carry around ] an extra .40 slide.

For this reason I went with a .40 G22 as the starting point for my multi caliber Glock setup.

I sold my older G17, and kept:

GEN 3 G22
Adv Arms .22 LR kit
Lone Wolf SS 9 MM conversion barrel for the G22
Lone Wolf 5" SS .40 S&W RIFLED barrel for the G22 - for lead reloads
several 9 MM 10/17 mags

Reading up on this multi caliber Glock idea on the internet, the consensus seems to be that the ejector/extractor issues can vary from gun to gun. Some people have had no problems, others have had to change a few parts. Supposedly, the 9MM parts work better [ grab tight ] on the .40 cases, than the .40 parts work on the 9 MM cases [ might not grab tight enough ] but in my limited experimentation, I had ZERO problems with either set up.

Originally, I kept a complete 9 MM Glock top end, but after shooting it beside the LW conversion barrel in the .40 slide, I found no reason the keep the extra 9 MM Glock parts.
The 9 mm LW barrel in the .40 slide was slightly more accurate, and just as reliable.

Right now, I am running all NEW 9MM ejector, 9 MM extractor [ with the loaded chamber indicator ] and 9mm recoil spring. With this setup, everything seems to work perfectly for both 9 MM and .40. [ about 200 rds of each so far ].

The Adv Arms .22 conversion kit is still breaking in, and I am still experimenting with different brands of ammo, trying to find one .22 LR load that will be totally reliable AND group well. Not found it yet???

Next on the list is a munimula tube HERA style stock/carbine conversione for the Glock, with a red dot and bipod, and an extended .357 SIG barrel to make the carbine conversion worthwhile for 100 yd shooting.

Of course,
with any opinions you get for free on the internet,
it may be worth less than you paid for it,

PS:
While it is possible to use a Glock 9 MM barrel in a G 22 slide, both the muzzle end and the chamber end of the 9 MM barrels are consideably smaller than the .40 barrel, so the fit will be VERY sloppy. The Lone Wolf 9 mm /40 conversion barrel is sized correctly EXTERNALLY for .40 S&W G22 slides.
hope this helps

FWIW, I'm pretty sure the 9mm conversion barrel in the G22 slide would not allow you to use the gun in IPSC or IDPA competition, so if that's in the cards then you will need to buy separate factory top ends. I converted my G17 to a G22 by swapping out all the trigger group/ejector internals and putting a G22 top end on it. I used to swap back and forth between the 9mm and 40 trigger groups/ejector, but now just leave the 40 trigger group/ejector in the gun and swap uppers and mags. The .40 ejector doesn't kick the 9mm brass as far away, but I haven't had any problems yet.

This has been discussed before some time ago. There is a safety issue here folks.

if you want to convert your 9mm to 40 or vice versa, you MUST replace the following parts for SAFETY and PROPER functioning:

Slide
Barrel
Trigger housing (with ejector)
Magazines

To many say you can get away with the slide, barrel and mags and do not do the cheapest part but most inportant of the lot...the trigger housing/ejector. The ejectors do not line up the same and an unsafe condition can result with a primer detonation when you least expect it.

I have been there for one of these in another gun (smith and wesson) and the resulting injury is nasty and potentially long term. for the 20.00 that the trigger housing costs (on the high side) replace the part when you do you change over and keep your self safe.

please don't take the following as a gloat, I am not talking outta my anus, I have been a glock armorer for a long time so I am not just dreaming this up.
