Hi all:

I'm looking at replacing the recoil pad on a new rem 700P (synthetic stock), and I can't seem to find the "slits" in the existing pad that you normally unscrew the pad thru. Anyone done this before? Could the pad maybe be glued on this stock?

Related note: If anyone knows which model limbsaver precision-fit pad fits this stock, and/or where to get same, info much appreciated :)

Stay away from the precision fit pads. They dont fit precisely.

I find teh pad on mine to be pretty good. If i am not mistaken, it's the R3 pad, and it's probably one of the best out there. I don't think you would gain much

Mines definitely not the R3. I've got limbsaver pads on other guns, and the one on this Rem is just a rock-hard slab of rubber :)

I'll look at the grind-to-fit then perhaps, although as long as the fit is close it's not that super-critical for me.

I had an HS Precision that was glued on. I had to cut it off to paint the
stock. You should be able to see the screw holes if they are there.

Recoil pad

I have done this exact thing on a pss stock. I cut around the rubber where it meets the stock with a utility knife. I then proceded to skin off the pad like I was skinning an animal. There was a metal spacer in there too. When I had the whole thing off I installed an R3 pad and screwed it on with the two screws. I had to belt sand sone of the R3 pad to fit but it turned out good. There is some stuff on the inside of the stock to screw into but I don't think it's real strong. You could epoxy something stronger in there. Not a tough project but once you start cutting you are committed. Don't be afraid grasshopper, you can do it.

Thanks for the info all! There's not a huge amount of recoil, but this is actually my wife's gun, and she's got a bad shoulder, so anything to soften it up a bit is good, and I know the limbsaver pads work well from past experience.

Wallbanger: You found the R3 pad fit OK then? I'll see if I can find one in that case, and start some surgery....

Wallbanger: I've got the old (rock hard) pad off via the "skinning" technique, as you suggested, but how did you get that metal spacer to go away? It appears as though the R3 would fit "inside" the stock (there's a recessed portion), but only if the spacer was gone...

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
