I am thinking of putting a scope on one of my 45-70 Marlins now that I have two. Never been a big fan of scopes on lever guns, but thought I would try it out for a little fun and something different. My scope choice will be a Leupold no matter what.

So tell me what power you would use and why. I allready have an idea of what I would like. But would like to hear some opinions and reasons why you would go with that. Shots will be 150 yards or less almost 100% of the time.

Thanks guys

*edit* I am thinking of the Leupold VXII 1-4 power

While I am against scoping a lever - I would choose the same scope. A little 1-4 is handy and quick.

I still wouldn't scope it though...

I know where you are coming from. Like I stated above I am not into scoped lever guns either.

But now I own two, a GG and the 22'' 1895. So I figured I would give it a whirl. If I dont like it I can always use the scope on something else. Wouldnt be at a loss, just gaining another scope :D

As horrendously ugly as it would be on the rifle - have you considered a red dot of some kind?

Would be deadly on ranges <150yds.

 No thanks

I am allready leary of scoping a lever gun, no red dots for this guy :D

It's your gun, the scope can be removed, same as a red dot.
If you are going to use it to hunt a scope is a real asset. Reciever sights are better than open sights but don't gather any light. Any scope will give you a better sight picture than open sights.
A compact 1-4x on a Marlin can look very nice and let you reach the full potentual of the rifle. And it doesn't have to be a Leupold although I believe the VXIII is one of the best low light scopes on the market.

Putting a scope on a Marlin that is drilled and tapped isn't being Bubba...
It may even be like riding a mo-ped, fun but you don't want your friends to see you.

I use a 1-4x Leupold on mine. It has enough eye relief that you won't get cut by your scope and the added resolution allows for precise bullet placement at longer distances.

For example:

200 yards, 350 grain Hornady RN

'nuff said.

use a luep fixed four its less than 10 oz and will fit low on your marlin due to the 33mm objective. i scope my marlins with 4x as it lets you shoot to the rifles full potential.

150yrds and in? get a set of peeps!

X2...scope on a close range lever gun  Perhaps on a Savage 99, Win. 88, Sako Finnwolf, well alright. But on a Marlin 336/95 or Winchester 94/86? Go buy a pickup truck and lower it so you can't leave the pavement while you're at it  :p ;) :D

I'd go with a fixed 2.5x Leupold
I'd use a fixed 2.5x Leupold
Now if I really felt the need to (shudder) scope a classic lever action (M99's excluded), I'm in agreement with these gents. Now then, where's that lowrider pickup of mine...

I use a 1.5 x 4.5 Bushnel Scopechief VI on my 444 & a Leupold 1 x 4 on my 45-70GS. Both are mounted with Weaver pivot mounts, should I need to access the open sights. They work well. I was at the range testing 250grGC & 325grGC cast loads in the 444 yesterday.:)

I'd use a fixed 2.5x Leupold with heavy crosshairs. It has plenty of magnification for the ranges it will be used at and weighs only 6.5oz. Being a fixed power scope it is a simple design and has great eye relief.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry dont like peeps, have shot lots with them. If I was going that way I wouldnt bother at all and just keep the open sights.

your pick of the VXII 1-4 is a good one, as would a VXIII 1.5-5x20

Ya that was another thought I was having. I do like the VXIII's, own four of them. Just thought the VXII might be a better choice as I might not even like having it on this rifle

:)

:) Hi - As a guide gun owner, stainless and blue, I thought I would give my 2 cent. I have Weaver 1x3's on both of mine. Crystal clear at all magnification, small and light as well they're cheap or relatively so at $250.00. And in my experience bulletproof - I've got 14 years between two scopes that've suffered through thousands of medium to fullhouse 45-70 loads. I practise offhand a lot.
