Had an interesting conversation last night over at a friend's place that involved fine cigars, some Port, Scotch( apparently both excellent as well) and for me, some fantastic espresso, all intertwined with a smoked pastrami ( secret recipe past from Emerill to wwbirds to sdvc!
)
The conversation itself was of course, about guns ( go figure!!LOL)- specifically why my hunting buddies and I have so many, the chokes, the various gauges and other such non important stuff as , loads, etc.
Non important, because as we explained to the friend with us (who does not shoot but is super interested), it is not so much the gauge, choke, load, or whatever else you want to discuss, it's the fact that the gun itself is more important to us as a hunting instrument as anything, and the BIGGEST factor as far as being able to put birds in the bag is....... THE SHOOTER!!

Also, we told our friend that it matters not what a person is shooting IMO, the two really important things to consider when choosing a hunting gun and those are
A: is the danged thing safe to shoot? it matters not how well one shoots a gun, if it is not safe, ie: bad barrels. soft locks and loose stock, etc, it is a danger to yourself and those around you.
B: do you LIKE the gun you are going to hunt with!! I could pick 10 guns right off the top of my head I will not hunt with for various reasons and NOT ONE of them involves anything but my desire not to!
If I don't like the the danged thing I will not enjoy my hunt and more than likely will not kill any more birds than a gun i do like, regardless of gauge and choke.
However, I try very hard not to be biased when recommending what I like and prefer to hunt with to a new shooter as they will more than likely get frustrated and give it up quickly - those that know me well know full well what I am talking about. There are easier guns to get the hang of out there that do not take special loading procedures, etc.!!
When it comes to trying to pick stuff like a fixed choke, most optimum action, barrel length, gauge, or any other of the number of things associated with our insanity, they do not hold a candle to the two biggest factors that I listed above.
Yes I know, the gun must fit, but that is a given.
If a guy wants a SXS or O/U, one that fits is far better than one that doesn't, same thing goes for a semi or a pump, etc.
That is a non starter as far as any argument goes when to it comes to guns!
So, get into it, try a bunch of guns, and get one you like, go out and have fun, and above all,
PLAY SAFE!!
