I decided to try a new muzzle brake/comp from PWS on my 10.5 shorty a couple of months ago. The brake worked really well for recoil but I just couldnt handle the noise it was way to loud. Flash was really bright, but thats to be expected. Heres the first brake I tried.

Decided to sell this brake and try something else.

PWS has another comp/brake designed for CQB, its sort of like the two part Noveske pig can. The end screws off and it is suppose to offer more flash reduction, noise diversion forward and some minimal compensation. I decided to try it out. I was really impressed with the noise being pushed forward. The gun now sounds about as loud or slightly quieter than a mid length barrel AR.

Havent put alot of rounds through it yet. So I cant say how much carbon will build up in the opening area. But the design is faily simple so cleaning should be easy. One of the best parts ive bought in a long time.

I put a vortex on my SPR. The PWS CQB pictured above is alot nicer than I thought it would be. I would rank its effect on recoil about mid way between the standard PWS comp and an A2 flash hider. The perceived noise reduction is quite nice though.

what kind of forward grip is that?

Its a Magpul AFG grip, for me at least its alot nicer grip angle than a standard verticle grip. The only thing I dont like about the AFG is that its rail placement doesnt allow use of the rails directly above it as it obscures the bottom part of the rail slightly.

And hence the reason we designed the SPEX brake. Conventional brakes are downright unpleasant on a short barrel. The SPEX drives noise and blast downrange and it kills flash dead, something most of its competitors don't do.

Here's a Vortex in action on one of our XCR micros.

Uhhhh corect me if I am wrong but isn't the Vortex supposed to reduce flash instead of enhancing it?

I took my AFG to a belt sander and reduced the height of the sides to allow room for other accessories to be attached. If you do it carefully it is easy to make it look as though it had come from the factory that way. The whole thing took about 10 minutes to fix.

And of course I didn't take a picture of it on that side.

interesting, but the PWS looks easier to clean :D

Flash seemed ok, couldnt really judge it to well as i was outside and it was pretty sunny out. Will try it indoors and see how it looks. The regular PWS brake was just to loud both indoors and outdoors.

thanks, yeah I was thinking the same thing about using a file maybe. Odd that for a company that sells rails and panels they would over look this small detail. It gets in the way of mounting lights and stuff on the side near the end.

I got an AFG that I used on a couple different guns for a while (I usually prefer a "normal" grip without a vertical grip though) and I took a block of wood and some sand paper, to reduce the little "ears".

If you use some 220 grit sandpaper once the main sanding is done, then rub in some gun oil onto a soft cloth, it will polish the plastic and make it look almost brand new. You have to look really hard to tell it was modified :D (just a tip it you want to trim the ears a bit).

I was the RO on a match last year that had a stage that commenced from inside a vehicle. Most of the guys who were running shortie 416's had SF muzzle brakes on them that were downright obnoxious when fired from inside of the vehicle. Some of the PWS guys were there with their 7" Diablo with the CQB brakes on them. The blast coming off of them was astonishingly less than the other types on the short rifles.

Yeah I am really impressed by the perceived lack of noise this thing puts out. The other PWS brake even with plugs and phones was way to loud indoors. I shot my buddies 14.5 after wards and its alittle louder than mine with this PWS CQB on it. Money well spent.

Why would you need to clean it? The high velocity plasma coming out of the muzzle will scour away any carbon buildup with every shot. There are tens of thousands of .223 and .308 silencers out there that have a typical lifespan of 20,000+ rounds and they are a hell of a lot more complex inside.

If you really need to clean it, take the thing off the barrel and blow it out from the back.

Your saying silencers recommend no cleaning for 20k rounds?

Take any flash hider and it looks like that if you get the picture at the right moment or IE: frame on a video, i bet you could get a picture like that with your spex:)

Actually we fired a 11.5" AR in the dark (totally dark) with a movie camera pointed at the brake in order to determine how much flash was reduced. On playback there was NO flash as in none other than a few tiny particles of unburned powder being captured on tape that in any situation short of pitch black darkness the eye would not see.

Im sure you guys make great products!

What my comment was about was breaking a video down frame to frame like the picture of the vortex.
Perception by the naked eye on a video clip or in person is not the same thing.
Do you have video of your test you could post side by side to other brakes flashiders.

Looks good on the video:)

My original comment on the picture of the vortex still stands!
The vortex is a better flash hider than the A2 birdcage on the video, yet the flash produced on the video is less, compared to the picture of the vortex, why?
Because your eyes or the video produced cannot recognize the flash, the dwell time is just too fast and short.

Anyways great product of the spex!

To the original poster did u sell your pws or do you still have it im looking for one.
