One of my friend called me today for a advice on a new AR. I have owned a couples but not in the category he looking for and i know that some guys here have ten times the knowledge i could have on the subject, i better like to ask than poorly advised him.

Here is what he looking for.

- very lightweight set-up, less front heavy as possible
- reliable
- Piston or DI don't matter
- simple no gismo
- effective to 200m
- money is not a factor

The first two that came in my mind are the PWS mk1 diablo and the DD MK18 sbr. I never fired one myself but i read good reviews on both and i know they are available right with sponsors on this site.

In therm of build quality any real advantage over the two ?

The first one have a 7 inch barrel and the other a 10.3. He was a little concern that the muzzle flash could be disturbing because he are habituated with longer barrel 14.5 inch and more. Can a good flash suppressor eradicate this of the equation or that's always annoying. He shoot most of the time in a indoor range.

Thanks for the help

I have had a few PWS rifles and currently have an MK112, I really like the long piston design of the PWS rifles and find the rifles to shoot very smooth and soft. The PWS's include many upgrades that people pay extra for, Enhanced buffer tube, ALG trigger (New versions), Triad Muzzle Device on the new version, and CQB break on the older version, very good short barrel rifle device, cuts down alot of the the flash.

DD's are very nice as well and I have a DD MK18 but prefer the PWS, myself and I do have to say that I am not a fan of the really short AR's so DD or PWS I would pick a 10" or greater anyway.

A good flash device is unlikely to eliminate all muzzle flash from a rifle with a 7.5" barrel but you can for sure make it more tolerable with devices that direct the blast forward, any Linear Comp can help this.

First of all PWS do make 10" and 12" SBR as well, however DD MK18 is DI system, so it will lighter than the piston system and almost $500 cheaper than the PWS.

Wow guys thanks for the fast reply, good infos here !

Any real advantage, Piston over DI in theses short barrel length ?

Both DD and PWS are top tier AR's with great customer service reputations, so both are good choices.
As hbean said, the PWS is going to be more expensive, the weight between a 7.5" PWS and 10.3 DD will be very similar but piston guns typically have more mass and parts and that makes them heavier, however PWS has done alot of work to keep the weight down and very comparable to DI guns.
The debate between Piston and DI has been going on forever, I personally like the PWS piston system and find it very reliable and well thought out. No better no worse than a DI gun just different, more of a preference thing, you will only really know if you can tell the difference or like one over another is to shot it.
The piston system does keep the internals of the upper assembly cleaner but you do get gas escape near the gas block that tends to make the barrel and inside the handguard dirty so you really just move the cleaning job around.

my vote is for PWS. incredibly light for a piston system (the newer versions with the keymod rail is even lighter than the first gen.) Yes, its a few bucks more, but you get what you pay for.
