I was looking at Questar's website when I noticed the PWS line of 7" and 10.5" barrel piston rifles. They seem interesting but I couldn't find much in ways of reviews online other than promo videos from PWS.

Does anyone have any of the PWS short barrel rifles and what do you think of them? Are they a nice alternative to the typical AR-15 builds considering they start at $2000?

There is an article in the February 2012 issue of Special Weapons (page 18). There have been many other articles written over the past few years, but this one is the most recent review that I know of.

There are lots of the 7" Diablo and 10.5" CQB's in the hands of Gunnutz as well... perhaps one of those users will reply to your thread and give you their feedback as well.

What is the availability of 7.62x39 mags like now?

Can get 5/30, 5 round and 10 round pistol mags from Wolverine Supplies. Not sure what Questar has in stock.

My pick:

Does anyone know if the PWS lower and receiver extension are designed specifically to prevent carrier tilt? I know that the uppers will work on most lowers but the PWS receiver extension is a solid piece and I wonder if it was built specifically to work better with their piston system?

From all of the reviews I have read carrier tilt is not a problem with their long-stroke piston design. There is a thread on another site where a guy has thousands of rounds through his and only experienced an extractor failure when he first got the rifle; once replaced no problems since then.

Ah it is the link posted above. Check it out.

The upper is standard and the lower is standard AR, any brand can be used.

They made some upgrades along the way to alleviate tilt that might or might not happen

- 2 buffer tubes designed to eliminate tilt wear, a forged one and a extruded one.
- their own bolt carrier, with bearing surfaces on the rear to ride in their buffer tube.
- a purpose built bolt that has no gas rings and a spring that keeps tension on the bolt foreward

You can still use any standard AR parts if you had too. PWS is awsome!

My 10.5' PWS shoots softer than my 18.5' midlength gased DI gun.

I really like my mk107. Never a single hiccup afer several hundred rounds. I bought mine new from questar last year. I have another piston ar which exhibits carrier tilt. My 107 does not have this. The buffer tube is extruded into the lower receiver a bit to help with tilt.

Being so short one sideeffect is that the muzzle end gets dirty. However this does not affect performance as far as I can tell. Runs like a sewing machine!

PWS Sand test...

Here is the Larry Vickers quote from M4C (stolen shamelessly):

I have seen and shot a few PWS guns and just recently received a MK214 for my TV show - I have yet to see a functioning problem with one. From what I have seen they build a quality product at a very reasonable price - and they use a unique operating mechanism that nobody can say is a knockoff of something else on the market.

Couple things of note; the rail system is proprietary and non free float. In addition if you are anti muzzle compensator (like me) they offer a flash suppressor alternative.

I see no reason to give PWS anything other than a thumbs up.

Cheers

Thanks for the clarification.
