I acquired this gun, a Python 38 Target 8" BBL Blue several months ago, from a old gentleman who recently passed away. The gun is 98+ % and a great shooter. What would this possibly be worth? I am considering trading it for a couple of good S/W or a Remington 700 mountain rifle 270cal. SS with laminate stock.

That's a limited production gun. Good catch. If it has original box and paper work, I'd put it in the low to mid 3s, at least to start.

2015 Gun Digest book of guns and prices. Anybody have Fjestad to compare? Some more research is needed.
I know book prices don't always reflect the different markets.
You also have to take into account that it's rare because nobody wanted one when they were new.
sorry but your info is dated

The gun in question was an interesting product from Colt to say the least. Colt tried many different variations on many of its revolvers, the most unusual one I ever handled was a Colt DiamondBack finished in the "ColtGuard" finish. Kinda like a brushed stainless treatment. Incidentally Colt applied the "ColtGuard" finish to some Pythons too.

While somewhat rare, the 38 special only caliber would have been much more successful with a 6" barrel. S&W got it somewhat more correct when they made their blue carbon steel model 14's with the full underlug, target hammer but standard trigger. Also not made anymore.

In my opinion, the 8" 38spl only blue Python is worth about C$1200.00.

Assuming this gun isn't damaged, if it was listed at $1200 it would probably sell in about 30 seconds (or less if I saw it sooner).

A few LNIB have recently sold on Gunbroker for 3K plus US. Others in excellent shape, with asking prices around 3k have continued to sit. Maybe they won't command that up here. Getting harder to gauge. Anything python has been a very hot commodity over the last year or so, but it is true that the market is softening.

As a longtime handgun dealer, I find the blue book is not much help on hand guns in this country.
I would say in exc condition 2000.oo +
Not everone rates exc. the same.
There are way more 357mag, than 38 sp. colts out there for sale.
