Q: Reloading 9x57 Mauser

Hello,

Seeking advice from anyone reloading in 9mm Mauser (9mmx57). Recently picked up a nice featherweight Mdl. 98 from TradExCanada. I have dies on order and know that brass can be easily formed from 8mm mauser. Question is, what is everyone using for Powder and bullets? Do I have to swage .358 bullest down to .355? I've slugged the bore with a .38 lead bullets at .356 (or .355 depending on where on the lands you put the caliper). So, would I need to swage? I do have a Lee bullet sizer in .357 dia. Would that be good enough? Thoughts? What about powder?? I have some WC845 left. Could that be used? (like H335 -less 5%)

I've considered the same purchase, but sanity has prevailed so far, as I hardly need another hunting rifle.

I would spend the $30 and buy the 0.356" sizer. Be careful which bullet you swage, as you could find yourself with jacket separation, which can be tolerable inside an animal, but not inside the barrel. I'd look at Speer, as they work nicely when I swage 338 bullets down to 329 for use on my M95 Mannlichers.

Use 8mm Mauser load data and you will be well within safe pressures. Go higher (up to another 5%) with care.

Barfly, congrats on the new smokepole, I got mine from Anthony as well and love it! My bull was 150 yards away when I hit him and it was like be got tossed by a locomotive!
I seated my bullets as long as possible for reliable feeding and ran H335 and CCI250 primers with excellent results.
I also necked up 8 Mauser brass.
My rifle is actually a 9,3 but they are so close I can't imagine why this combo wouldn't work in yours too.

Found some data on the net. So, I have since resized some Hornady .358 250 grain pills down to .357 and then .356. Looks good so far. I have 50 pcs. of 9.3x57 cases that I will size down to 9x57 using my new Redding Dies. Also, found some factory Winchester cartridges. The bullets weigh just over 280 grains! Once I get out, I will crony my loads and the factory. Might try using some left over WC845 powder as well.
