Just wondering if anyone have experience with consistency of Varget. I'll be reloading for a few cartidges and wondering if you rework the load after you move to a new lot# of powder. Thanks in advance. :)

*edit - I guess to add wondering what the BR and F-class guys are doing for your cartridges.

I've been using Varget exclusively in my .223 for the last 5 years. Never had an issue yet. I've done testing in all seasons and weather conditions. Top notch stuff in my books. (Your mileage may vary.)

My method is to buy 21 - 24 lbs mix it all together. then pour it back into the jugs. I should be able to reload for 4 years and get the same results, in my 308.

4yrs???? Must be nice to have it last that long. I can go through that much if in a year if I don't limit myself (which I work very hard at doing)

This year I plan to go through approx. 1500-2000 rounds of Match ammo (at 31gr/rnd avg in my 6BR that will be approx 8.8lbs/2000rnds) and that doesn't include all my practice ammo that I shoot at least once per week which will be at least another 4-6lbs.

Jeeeebus I need a cheaper hobby!!!!

LOL

x2tigrr. That is the best way to keep the powder consistent. There was a time, when I only shot a few rifles, that I would buy enough powder to wear the rifle out. That sort of went by the wayside, long before the rifle wore out as it was either sold or relegated to the safe. I still buy large lots of powder though. The powders are usually from the same lot but not always. I've found that if you get several lots in a batch, say a box of partial tins or from several tables at a gun show, that when they're blended, there is little if any difference from the last batch. This works for all powders, not just Varget and if you can afford to do it with all of the powders you use, you can usually get away with blending the new lots in with the old blend without changing anything. It is a really handy thing when you're shooting a bench rest rifle and you have a limited competitive barrel life.

Yeesh....F-class what the hell am I getting myself into:rolleyes:. Damn I knew I shouldn't of come out to the clinic last April. So CyaNide do you replace your barrel every year??? Yipes.

Thanks guys for the tip on blending the different lots to keep things consistent. I have 3lbs right now and I guess if I want to get as good as CyaN1de I'll need to shoot twice as much.......so 40lbs of Varget ;)

The "lot" I shoot in my good gun is a mixed batch. I have another 18lbs in 2 lots that I am going to mix once the other is depleted.

No I don't change my barrel every year, I shoot 3 different guns but one of them I do not use Varget in so I wasn't even including that one in my calculations.. LOL

This year will be an exceptionally busy year, generally I will put 1000-1200 match rounds through a barrel per year. This should give me 2 yrs/barrel if everything keeps working, then I can always cut it back and hopefully get another 1500+ rounds out of it.
