Seems they're hitting a high cycle the last few years.

It has been a crappy deer year again and I am considering hunting them this winter. I feel my .270's too much but my .22 isn't enough. I've been thinking about buying an SKS. Would it serve this purpose well?

If it's too heavy for a long day of carry, doesn't like cold etc. please let me know. Of course I'm really looking for justification for the purchase. Indulge me

Slightly more seriously though... If anyone in the Montreal area is interested let me know.

Unless you saving the hides, just use the .270. I use whatever I have in my hands at the time. I have taken them with .30-30, 8x57, and .22-250, and the worst mess was a poor hit from the .22-250.

Are you organizing a Yote hunt? Sounds like fun!

You're probably right about a wolf/coyote high lately. I've seen quite a few winter deer kills right in the middle of our lake barely a few 100 yards from our cottages just north of Mont Tremblant. I've heard more howling at night too. I wish you could shoot these buggers on a moonlit stary night like the vermin they are because they just vanish during the day.

An SKS isn't exactly a long range precise shooting rifle, but they do look like a lot of fun! I suppose if shots are confined to shorter distances, it'll do.

i shot my wolf with a 286gr from a 9.3x62 no pelt damage............I doubt it even opened up........................Harold

I never thought about the weight off an SKS til I packed a Winchester 94 for 2 weeks of morning walks...it's actually pretty heavy(comparitively). Fun as hell though

use the 270, use your deer load, the practice is great & coyote hides are not worth picking up. Coyotes are not as fast to die as some think. The 270 should stop the tracking. Good luck with whatever you use. AJ

I shot 2 coyotes with my sks using fmj. the first I hit in the head and he bucklrd the 2nd I hit in the lungs he ran about 20 ft then got a little confused then dropped dead the fmjs went clean through with a real small exit wound I hit them both under 75 yards but the round went wher I aimed it, I love my sks but I hunt bush and not fields so range was never an issue at a 100 yrds the groupings werent terrible for a budget semi
