I want something better than a run of the mill Remington 700, Winchester 70, Tikka, Savage or A-Bolt. I want something comparable to a Sako, Kimber or CZ 550. Being a leftie my options are limited.

Any suggestions? I would say my price range is up to around $2000 or a bit more.

I am considering a Remington Custom KS but any of the local gun shops I have talked to look at me like I am speaking a different language when I ask them about getting a gun from the Remington custom shop.

This one in .280 Remington would be sweet.

i was just browsing through some catalogs to try and help and all i can say is im sure glad i was born right-handed. you guys get screwed when it comes to guns :(
CZ only makes a .22 in left hand, and they announced it like its some huge deal that they even do that.

Get a left handed action of your choice and have someone build what you want. Should be able to spend that 2000 pretty quick. CZ does make a lefty (used to) in 308, Lux version I think, and they do make a 452 in 17hmr or 22wmr also.

What companies sell actions? I have considered the custom route but find it a little confusing.

Something like this:

Action ????
Gaillard Barrel
McMillian or other good stock?

Pay someone who knows what they are doing to put it together?

I want to get a 338-06 built on a montana action. As for production left handed rifles then id get a sako. Weatherby makes there Mk5 in left handed. The only other ones i know of are remington, tikka, savage, sako, ruger and some old winchesters. I think your best bet would be to get a montana action and barrel.

BB,

With a $2000.00 budget you are getting into custom territory. Get the right smith and components and you'll have a far superior rifle than most from the factory, IMO. And it'll be exactly what you want, in the chambering you want.

Actions- lots of custom actions out there. I've only ever gone the donor rifle route. M70s are my action of choice. A good smith can true/tune most of the factory offerings.

Barrels- Gaillard or Smith. Good Canadian rifle barrels. Lots of others out of the states.

Stocks- McMillan, Bansner, Bell and Carlson. A couple of well known synthetic stock makers, in descending order of cost/quality. Wildcat composites is a Alberta based stock maker. Or use the donor rifles stock till funds allow.

Have fun with it. Research gunsmiths carefully though.........

Sako did make LH rifles in the past.......... not much caliber selection, as per usual. CZ has been threatening to release the 550 in LH for years. Kimber will supposedly be doing a LH run sometime in the summer of 2008.

I'd be glad to help with any other questions you might have, if I can. Good luck.

BB,
Not sure what exactly you are looking for.
There are a number of custom actions available in LH.
I currently have a Stiller repeater action on order.
You can check with Ian Robertson (ianrobertson) member on this board about Stiller actions.

I have a M70 chambered in 7mm mag. It is not a great shooter even though it a newish gun. I could use the action to build a new rifle even if I don't want it (the new one) in 7mm?

The only other issue is I would prefer SS and my M70 action is blued, guess I could go parkerized route.

Is there such a thing as an after market lament stock?

Ideally I would like a SS/black lament high quality rifle chambered in 308.

That action would have a magnum bolt face and should work for many cartridges with .532 base. (458WM, 416RM, 338WM, 300WM, etc.) This action would not be easily compatible with the .308 family of cartridges though. You would be best to start with a short action standard bolt face, although a long action standard bolt face would do in a pinch. (Might as well do a 30-06 then though.)

My re-barrelled rifles are Blued action w/ bead blasted SS barrels. I kind of like the look but if it wasn't your cup of tea there are lots of good, durable coatings/finishes available now. Armacote, Duracote, Gunkote, etc. I have no personal experience with any of these products though.

For laminate stocks, look here-
http://www.serengetistockworks.com/

and here-
http://www.accurateinnovations.com/

Those are the nicest that I know of. There are cheaper options than these available.

Thanks for all the great info! :D

How about some pics and details of some our yours? I would like the see how the blued action/SS barrel looks.

I was just looking at a site that has CZ550 in left hand and I have a CZ452 leftie already as well as my Ruger 77mk II stainless leftie. Remmie and Browning both list them. I was recently looking at replacing my leftie friendly Ruger no 1 223 with a leftie and ended up with a fair list of choices. Dont remember seeing Sako on the list though. Tikka was a definite choice but then I was looking for a different calibre. I go to the manufacturers sites and look for lefties to get model numbers. Wholesale lists a bunch of lefties in their cat. Good luck and do your homework-it pays off. More available now than they were even 3 years ago. Keep trying.

I have been to the CZ site and have never seen anything but rimfire in left handed. Can you provide a link to the site that has a CZ550 in left?

I am aware of all the Ruger, Remington and Browning offerings. Like I said at the beginning of the thread, I am looking for something a little "higher end". I have Ruger #1, they are great guns and work great for lefties but I am looking for a bolt gun.

Thanks for the info.

Cz

CZ does have some LH offerings.

The 452 in 22RF, 22WMR, 17HMR.

The 527 in 223Rem and 204Ruger.

The 550 could be released at any time or not ever. CZ has been saying 'next summer' for about 5 years now. The 550 is the model chambered for big game cartridges. 30-06, etc.

CZ are great rifles for the money, IMO.

Also, with a budget of ~$2000 I should have mentioned these guys- Cooper Arms. Awesome rifles with 1/2 MOA guarantee. You'd be waiting a while though.
