Quality SKS? Russian?

I have tried searching, only to come up with the assumption that the Russian SKS is better than a norico.

Is the Russian SKS worth the extra money?

Does the Russian have any better protection from corrosive ammo?

Or is it simpler to just get a norico and not worry as much about cleaning?

What is a new/unused SKS of each type generally worth?



I plan to take it with me while quading, so cleaning after using corrosive ammo may have to wait up to 5 days after each use for me to get back home from camping before i would be able to give it a good cleaning.
It will get beat up some on the quad, but im usually a fan of quality over quantity, when affordable.
 
if you dont care about looks and plan to not use the wood stock get a chinese.

Russian refurb or new Chinese is priced about the same, give or take 50 bucks. So better get the real deal...go Russkie with chrome lined barrel.

As far as cleaning in the field. How long do you stay in field, quadding?

If it is only a couple of days, or even couple of weeks, just pour some hot water from the breech down the bore (or hot coffee:D)or spray down a half second burst of g96 and let it drain through the muzzle..

As well, lightly spray some g96 or whatever good quality gun spray oil on the internals. If you have some time in the field, remove the gastube/piston and spray them some of that oil and little squirt into the gas port fitting attached to the barrel.

No need to get anal about cleaning after corrosive ammo as long as you understand the mechanics behind the corrosion process, which have discussed to death in this Red Rifle sub forum.

So... what you're saying is that Ivan the Russian conscript who hasn't been home in years and has walked across the soviet union can keep his rifle clean, but you can't? :slap:

Might as well buy yourself a norc and run it into the ground...

So could i simply poor some warm water down the barrel, give it a minute to run out, then spray some G96 down the barrel and chamber for a simple 5 minute(or less) job a day be good enough before i get home and can do a full cleaning?

How hard is it to remove the gastube/piston?

I have no problem spending a few minutes every morning to give it a quick clean over. But if i gotta sit down for half hour and detail the thing everyday i got a 1000 other things to do while up camping, going with a norico and not caring if i beat it up may then be a better option in that case.
 
WD40 works better then windex or water "I read in a test on small arms review"

But go with a Russkie, prettier and better made....it will not mind a little abuse once in a while....same with a Norkie.
 
Poking fun aside, I'd suggest that you pick yourself up a bore snake for quick cleaning jobs. They're out there for cheaper, but here's an example from canadian tire: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...tingAccessories/PRD~0755426P/Bore%2BSnake.jsp

Other than that, for field-expedient cleaning I know of guys who have used the cleaning kits that come with the rifle- not ideal, but if you're just keeping it as a bush-thumper it works. Just take a swab and wrap it around the jag. Be sure to give it a swab through the gas tube as well. A little bit of hoppes (or CLP in a pinch) is always your friend.
 
Put boiling water, but don't burn yourself :) be careful. Let it dry a bit and put W40 you can buy in 4 liter can or spray. When you have more time give it a good clean.

It takes about 2 minutes to take the rifle apart if you know what you are doing you can take it apart in 45 sec.

piss in the barrel if all else fails. Will be messy and the resale value will be junk, but will stop rust from forming ;) In all honesty the hot water method followed by a swipe with a boresnake and oil will delay the corrosion long enough to get a decent cleaning in

Every Russian soldier was trained to clean his rifle . Every soldier in the world!
Their life's dependent on it. Someone who did not would have learn his last lesson.
Soviet Army was strict I do not see someone not cleaning his rifle. Remember little oil pouch that they come with ? That is what they are intended for.;)

If you go with Norinco and this attitude you will buy new one every year or maybe after every camping :).
Evey gun needs attention with corrosive ammo comes more responsibility. You pay less for them and then you spend your time cleaning after them.
You never pay less for excellent quality. You pay more for BMW and 1st class ticket on Concorde but you can drive Hyundai and fly air China for less.
