Query on a K98

Good day, gentlemen. I'm hoping (actually I'm pretty sure) there's a Mauser guru on here that can answer a question for me. I have a really nice K98 that was made in Oberndorf, in 1944. There's a stamping on the top of the barrel, right at the breach, on top of the shoulder, just in front of the receiver " 7.89 " (my quotation marks). I tried chambering a couple of rounds (one milsurp and one commercial) and they chambered "slicker than the snot on a hens lip" - but I'm rather hesitant to touch off one of these rounds, if that number means the bore diameter. If I "mic" some of the cartridges I have, they seem to run anywhere between 8.10 and 8.21.
Can anyone enlighten me ? Thanks for reading

lol, yup. Jbmauser, it's all you.
 
ANY commercial or military load in 8x57 will work just fine in ANY WW2 production K98k. The only possible issue would be with old Mausers with the J bore(.318 dia.) produced from 1898 until 1905 or so.
 
Lands/grooves would be 7.9/8.2mm (.312/.323) give or take due to manufacturing tolerances.
The 8mm mauser was also called 7.9x57 by zee germans...
 
Is a Gew88/05 with the original barrel that has been stamped "S" safe to shoot with .323 milsurp ammo? It is my understanding that the "S" conversion was simply a modification to the throat with a reamer, not a re-bore to deepen the grooves from .318 to .323.

You need to slug the bore on these. I personally wouldn't fire milsurps ammo out of one. I would only reload to ensure it is safe for that rifle.
