Questiion for A1 "experts"

I have a set of triangle handguards that I was planning on using on a Vietnam M16A1 clone, but they are 1/2 inch too short to fit on the A1 or A2 upper that I was trying to mount them on. Why would that be? They don't appear to be cut or molested in any way.

Maybe for one of the .22 ar-15 lookalike "clones" which are restricted, Armscor or something...
 
Interesting, never thought of the clone or airsoft angle. Of course they were assured to be original when I bought them off of ###-bay a couple of years ago. Anyone able to measure a set that works and let me know how long they are?
