Just a quick question about how to tell if an 870 reciever will handle 3" or just 23/4 shells .The reciever in question is from a 870 express shotgun and ser# does end with letter M.Thanks

I have been told that if the serial # ends in a "m", the reciever can handle a 3" shell. I have handled a 2 3/4" express and the 3" shell does not fit well in the receiver. The loaded shell did not eject well at all. (No I did not fire it!) My 870 serial ends in a "m" and shoots 3" shells. But then the receiver says right on it "MAGNUM". Just make sure your barrel is built for 3" shells!

Repete,

Did Remington ever offer a wingmaster in matte finish? The firearm I handled did not handle 3" shells due to receiver size, Ejection port was too small for an expanded 3" shell. I could have sworn it was a express, but it was last year that I handled this particular 12g. I know that the firearm was a Remington 870 with matte finish, maybe a trap version? Thanks

The only matte finished Wingmasters were the Police models, with the remainder a high gloss.

PM me the serial # and I can give you an idea when it was made.

RePete.

I've seen ALOT of wingmasters bead blasted and reblued by people who got rust and wanted an inexpensive fix at the gunsmith. Maybe you had one of those?

Unfortunately, the firearm was my friends that he lent me for a deer hunt last year, so I dont have access to it at this time. I do know however, that the shotgun serial number did not have a "m" at the end. I found this unusual as I would have no idea why Remington would make a 2 3/4 shotgun! Especially with screw in chokes! Thanks for the offer to look up the serial number for me. I will have to check with you on another Pump action Remington I do own. It was sold to me as an express but it has some nice blueing and is called a "sportsman 12 magnum". All 870 parts fit on it, so far as I know. Its going to be my foundation for my build. :D
