Question about a Remington Sportsman 58

Just picked up a nice 1959 12ga Sportsman 58 in 2 3/4". I'm wondering if someone can confirm if my magazine tube cap is missing something. Here is a picture:

It won't cycle target loads at all regardless of where I set the load. It did have a strap peg on it which I removed. I'm wondering if the hole left behind isn't supposed to be there?

Any help would be appreciated.

No, that hole isn't supposed to be there. The gas is going out there rather than back to cycle the action. Put whatever you took out back in and try it.

Thanks for your help. I'll give that a go and see what happens. Unfortunately, I won't likely have a chance to shoot til next weekend.
