What exactly is the law pertaining to barrels shorter then 18.5" when they come shorter from the factory? For example the Ruger tactical .22 with the 16" barrel or the grizzly arms 8" barreled 12 gauge

the 18.5" rule applies to centrefire semi-auto firearms only. Rimfire rifles of any kind and pump, lever, single shot, etc. centerfire are exempt from this restriction as long as the barrels are factory barrels and not cut down. The only length nrestriction os that the overall length of the firearm must be over 26". Silly, silly rules... ;)

So for the two examples you list, the Ruger Target Tactical is a rimfire semi-auto so it it exempt from the barrel length rule. The Griz is a pump centrefire and is also exempt.

Thanks for the quick reply, definitely cleared things up for me... one other question now ha ha. what are the rules on center-fire bolt action magazine capacity?

Haha! Good question! Semi-auto centrefire rifle magazines are limited to 5 rounds. Bolts, pumps, levers, etc; no mag capacity limit. Rimfre rifle magazines, whether for a semi-auto or not; no mag capacity limit. All pistol mags, rimfire or centrefire, are 10 rounds max.

"...Bolts, pumps, levers, etc; no mag capacity limit..." Non-detachable only. Detachable centre fire mags over 5 rounds are evil by themselves, except for Lee-Enfield mags and M1 Rifle clips.
Silly is putting it mildly.

So a 10 round detachable Accurcy International magazine would be illegal?

Thanks again, with your knowledge you should make a sticky about all these confusing laws and regulations haha.

No worries, we're always happy to help out. I think there may be a sticky or two floating around here somewhere....

But you can see how confusing the laws can be when even a long-time shooter like sunray gets confused... ;)

"...Accurcy International magazine..." Lee-Enfield copy.

Australian International Arms is a Lee Enfield copy.

The Accuracy International rifle or the Accuracy International Chassis System for Remington barrelled actions have nothing to do with the Lee Enfield.
HS Precision also markets 10 round magazines for Remington 700 rifles.

Whether or not a magazine is detachable isn't a factor in the magazine capacity regulations.

The law is actually quite clear if you take the time to read it. Those who feel that law is confusing are usually confused by the various answers given by other people, not having actually read the law.

But that would actually require taking the time to look up the law, and having a degree of reading comprehension.

NO! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!

God DAMN it I'm tired of seeing people write this nonsense! Detachable has NOTHING to do with it!

The only 5-round limitations on centrefire rifles are for SEMI-AUTOMATICS.

You could have a 1,000 round drum for your bolt action rifle and, detachable or not, it would be LEGAL.

F*CK I'm tired of the misinformation about mag laws that gets spouted sometimes!

From the CFC website, FAQ section:

Q. What is the maximum number of cartridges that a firearm magazine can legally hold?

As set out in Criminal Code Regulations, some large-capacity magazines are prohibited regardless of the class of firearm to which the magazines are attached. As a general rule, the maximum magazine capacity is:

* 5 cartridges for most magazines designed for a semi-automatic centre-fire long gun; or
* 10 cartridges for most handgun magazines

A large-capacity magazine is not prohibited if it has been permanently altered so that it cannot hold more than the number of cartridges allowed by law. Acceptable ways to alter a magazine are set out in the regulations.

There is no limit to the magazine capacity for semi-automatic rim-fire long guns, or for other long guns that are not semi-automatics.
